Marvel’s Midnight Suns gift guide

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is already going to be a surprise for many players. On one hand, those who enjoy most superhero games will need to adapt to the turn-based card battle system, and tactics fans will need to rework their strategies. What neither group will be expecting is all the systems and activities that can be done in the Abbey, where you spend your time between missions.

One very important thing you need to do in the Abbey is raise your friendship levels with your fellow members of the Midnight Suns. While the system isn’t quite as deep or fleshed out as in a Persona or Fire Emblem game, building a relationship with your favorite superheroes does come with tangible benefits when in combat. One of the best ways to help get closer to these heroes is by giving them gifts. If you struggle to know what to get your best friend, let alone a superhero, as a present, here’s a full gift guide for what each hero will appreciate most in Marvel’s Midnight Suns.

How gifts work

Gifts in Marvel’s Midnight Suns function a lot like they do in other RPGs. They are little items you can give to heroes after you do a hangout with them to potentially boost how much friendship XP you gain with them. While that sounds simple enough, there are over 60 gifts in the game, and even though no gift will take away any friendship XP, only some will earn you the maximum amount.

How to get gifts

Gifts can be obtained in three ways. First is to simply scrounge around the Abbey and pick them up. Simply roam around and keep an eye out for any items you can interact with.

The second way is to purchase them via the gift shop, which will unlock once you’ve reached a certain threshold of total friendship levels. Gifts from this shop will cost you Gloss, but the shop gifts are of much higher quality than ones you simply find.

Finally, you can craft gifts in Agatha’s cauldron. Gifts you craft are unique, so they can only be made and given once, but they grant the most XP if you give them to the correct hero.

You can now play this underrated Marvel RPG for free thanks to Epic Games Store
Lilith, Mother of Demons, in the Marvel's Midnight Suns trailer.

If you missed out on Marvel's Midnight Suns, the 2022 turn-based RPG from XCOM developer Firaxis Games -- and based on the poor sales numbers, a lot of you did -- you can now play it for free thanks to the Epic Games Store.

The storefront has a new free game for users to claim every week, and this time it's Marvel's Midnight Suns. However, you only have until June 13 to claim the game for free. The deal only applies to the base game, although the two editions with extras are also on sale. The digital+ version comes with 11 premium skins and is on sale for $20 (down from the $80 full price). If you want access to all the post-launch characters -- Deadpool, Venom, Morbius, and Storm -- along with those premium skins, you can purchase the legendary edition for $25 (down from $100).

Marvel’s Midnight Suns dev confirms romance options were never in the game
Magik after opening a portal for the first time in Marvel's Midnight Suns.

When Marvel's Midnight Suns was released in 2022, some were disappointed that players were unable to romance any of the superhero characters in the game. While players have wondered whether or not that was Marvel or Firaxis' decision, Midnight Suns' Creative Director Jake Solomon has now affirmed to Digital Trends in an interview that he truly never considered romance for the game.

"I’ve seen people say romance was a part of this, but it never was. I never even brought it up to Marvel because I couldn’t find a way," Solomon told Digital Trends as part of a wider discussion about his work on XCOM and Marvel's Midnight Suns, as well as the formation of Midsummer Studios. "I think the best way for romance to work is for the characters to respond to what the main character wants, right? I think it has to be like that, so it’s hard to mess with these really defined characters. They have these defined sexualities, and it would be hard to fulfill fantasies for all players in terms of what it is they want to do."

A wedding in Stardew Valley. The player characters is marrying Haley, who's in a bridal gown. They're standing underneath an arch with all the townsfolk watching.

The residents of Pelican Town are friendly enough when you begin a new farming adventure in Stardew Valley, but you need to do some work to really earn their affection.

You have an individual affection level with each that can be raised primarily in two ways: doing quests for them and giving them gifts. The latter option is far faster and more efficient, but also riskier. Unlike some other games, each character in Stardew Valley has gifts they like and love but also feel nothing for as well as dislike or hate. Giving a bad gift to a character you're hoping to romance will only set you back. Let's open our journals and make sure we know the best gifts for each villager in town.
