‘Mass Effect 4’ will be Shepard-free

In a recent interview with Complex, BioWare’s Mac Walters confirmed that Mass Effect 4 will not feature the character of Shepard, nor will it specifically relate to the events Shepard was at the heart of.

That shouldn’t really come as a huge surprise to those that completed the trilogy. The ending put a definite cap on Shepard’s battle with the Reapers, regardless of which version you played or what options you made. It may not have been loved by all, but it was a fairly definitive conclusion, even if it did leave a few threads dangling.

“Well, I can’t get into details, but the idea is that we have agreed to tell a story that doesn’t relate necessarily to any of the Shepard events at all, whatsoever,” Walters told Complex.

Walters helped to write the Mass Effect series, and is currently writing a 13 issue miniseries for Dark Horse titled Mass Effect: Foundation. He is also working on the fourth Mass Effect game, which sounds like it is still in the very early stages of development. Walters was able to confirm, however, that it won’t be a spin-off, but rather a completely new story.

He went on to discuss the ending of Mass Effect 3, so if you don’t want to be spoiled, this is a good point to stop reading.

After making your choice on how to deal with the Reapers in one of the endings of Mass Effect 3, Shepard is seen to still be breathing. It was the so-called “best ending,” but based on what Walters said, it is not the canon ending.

“It was set up, even from the get-go, that this was a character that was going to die,” he said.

So far, very little is known about Mass Effect 4 other than it will be designed for the next-gen consoles, and run the new Frostbite 3 Engine designed by DICE. A Mass Effect movie is also in the works, although it is said to be a long way from release.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster is more like Dead Space’s remake than Resident Evil 4’s
Frank talks to Jessica in Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster.

Don't let Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster's name fool you; this is essentially a full-on remake of Capcom's classic zombie game. While the narrative and core gameplay loop are the same, Dead Rising has seen a complete visual overhaul, as well as a few gameplay tweaks to make it more enjoyable to play. It's the same great game you remember, but it now just feels like something that could be released in 2024 rather than 2006. After going hands-on with Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, it's clear that this game is less like the remake treatment Capcom gave Resident Evil 4 last year and more like the one EA gave Dead Space. It's an extremely faithful modern upgrade for a horror classic that still holds up today.

The best Sims 4 mods

One of the things that makes the Sims 4 one of the best cozy games is how much freedom it gives you in crafting your perfect simulated life. There have been dozens upon dozens of official DLC add-ons for the game over the years that give you more content and options to play with while you wait for Sims 5, but even that is a drop in the bucket compared to what modders have done. These aren't mere Sims 4 cheats; they bring brand-new content and systems into the game at no cost. If you thought the number of official add-ons was overwhelming, wait until you start looking through the mods. Instead, you can just check out our curated list of the best Sims 4 mods.
What is a mod?
If you're here, you probably already know what a mod is, but for those getting into them for the first time, let's go through what a mod is. A mod -- as the name suggests -- is a modification to the game created by a member of the community. Oftentimes, mods are in line with what the community wants, and in some instances, are even more effective than updates implemented by Maxis. Other times, a mod is an outrageous yet fun implementation that makes the game more enjoyable. Modding has become so ingrained in The Sims experience that The Sims 4 has a section in its menu devoted to mods, allowing you to enable them without going through any weird processes on the back end.

The game's developers have embraced mods and recognize that the community loves to create and use them. It's part of the experience. With that in mind, you will need to download the mods you want to use, install them, and enable them from within the game in order for them to function properly. Once you do so, you'll be ready to jump in and try out your new mods.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor finally coming to PS4 and Xbox One in September
Cal Kestis wielding his blue lightsaber and carrying BD-1 in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

EA and Respawn Entertainment have revealed that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will come out on September 17. That means players who only own last-gen consoles will be able to try out this excellent action-adventure game that was previously exclusive to PC and current-gen consoles.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a sequel to 2019's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and continues the story of Cal Kestis, who stumbles upon a new threat connected to the universe's High Republic era. I gave the game a four-star review when it launched in April 2023, writing that "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor still tells a thematically rich, character-driven Jedi tale in one of the most densely packed 3D Metroidvania games I’ve ever played. It’s now the definitive single-player Star Wars experience."
