Rockstar Games released a couple of new screens today for Max Payne 3, which you can check out above and below. The images don’t bring any great revelations about the game, but they do demonstrate just how beautiful games can look with Rockstar’s RAGE engine (see also: Red Dead Redemption.

Max Payne 3 picks up roughly a decade after the events of the previous game. The titular modern-day gunslinger has left his job as a New York City cop and gone off to Sao Paolo, Brazil, where he’s landed himself in some trouble. He’s a private security guy now, working for a wealthy local family, when he suddenly finds himself double-crossed and on the run. You can bet that Max’s trusty guns will be fired at least a few times in his search for the truth,

There’s no release date yet for Payne 3, though holiday 2012 seems like a reasonable guess. Rockstar hasn’t announced anything else lately, though rumors continue to suggest that an announcement for another Grand Theft Auto game is imminent.

3 Xbox Game Pass games to play this Independence Day weekend (July 4-7)
Fallout 3 key art featuring the protagonist wearing the iconic power armor.

It's Independence Day weekend, so you're probably looking for some games to play if you don't have to work this holiday weekend. If you're subscribed to Xbox Game Pass, the service offers plenty of games to choose from. This weekend, three titles from its catalog stand out as particularly fitting to play on this holiday weekend if you plan on spending more time on your Xbox or PC rather than outside with this time off.

The first is an indie game from Free Lives and Devolver Digital that satirizes the over-the-top, bombastic nature of both American patriotism and blockbuster movies. Next, there's a Fallout video game set around Washington, D.C., that you can check out if you're getting tired of playing Fallout 4 and Fallout 76. Finally, I'm recommending a baseball game that's on Xbox Game Pass for those who'd rather play a game themselves than watch one on TV.

Before you play Homeworld 3, try this VR game as a primer
Two fleets fight in Homeworld: Vast Reaches.

Homeworld 3 launches next week, but there's a game Homeworld fans who own a Meta Quest 2 or 3 should check out right now. Homeworld: Vast Reaches, which came to Meta's VR headsets on May 2, is a prequel set between the events of the first two Homeworld games. This VR game offers up the core Homeworld experience in a novel niche of the video game medium.

It's not as deep or complex as Homeworld 3 looks, but it doesn't need to be. Vast Reaches immerses players in the franchise's universe once again and reacquaints them with the basics of its real-time strategy combat ahead of a highly anticipated new entry on PC. As such, checking out Vast Reaches should make this last week of waiting for Homeworld 3 a little less painful.
Homeworld, but in VR
Homeworld: Vast Reaches was developed by FarBridge, who has previously worked on VR games like Walkabout Mini Golf, Dragon Fight VR, and Jar Wars. Made with Gearbox Entertainment's support and blessing, it boils Homeworld down to its core elements and rebuilds it in VR. Players control a new Fleet Command connected to Karan S'jet's Mothership, which is the conceit behind how players view battles.
