Everything announced at Meta Quest Gaming Showcase 2023

The first big gaming showcase of June is here, and it gave us a look at what’s next for games made for the Meta Quest family of VR headsets. It was an important showcase too, as the Meta Quest Pro came out last year to very muted results, the idea of the metaverse is fading in its relevancy, and the Meta Quest 3 headset is going to release this fall. During this showcase, Meta tried t reaffirm why people should care about owning one of its VR headsets.

It did so mainly by revealing VR follow-ups to popular IP. Games like Samba de Amigo, The 7th Guest, and Bulletstorm are being remade in VR. Meanwhile, well-known IP like Stranger Things, Attack on Titan, and Assassin’s Creed are also making the jump to virtual reality as well, and as sequel to Asgard’s Wrath is in the works. A lot was revealed during the preshow and actual showcase, so rounded up everything that was revealed for you right here.

Meta Quest Gaming Showcase 2023

Samba de Amigo is coming to VR

Samba de Amigo | Announcement Trailer | Meta Quest 2 + 3 + Pro

Sega’s Samba de Amigo revival comes out for Switch in August, but it’s also getting a VR version of Meta Quest headsets. Samba de Amigo: Party Central’s rhythm game experience seems to adapt surprisingly well to virtual reality, with players using the Meta Quest controllers to shake their maracas and strike poses. Samba de Amigo releases for Meta Quest 2 sometime this Fall and is available for pre-order on the Meta Quest Store now.

The 7th Guest is getting remade in VR

7th Guest VR | Announcement Trailer | Meta Quest 2 + 3 + Pro

The 7th Guest was an iconic early PC game that helped spearhead the popularity of CD-ROMs and left a clear mark on the adventure game genre. Now, Vertigo Games is remaking The 7th Guest in VR, with exploring the house as a virtual space replacing the interactive movie feel of the original. The 7th Guest will be released for Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro later this year.

Stranger Things VR game lets you take control of Vecna

Stranger Things VR | Gameplay Trailer | Meta Quest 2 + 3 + Pro

We also got our first extended look at Stranger Things VR during the show. We see what it’s like to take the role of Vecna, the villain of the Netflix show’s final two seasons, as he explores the Upside Down and tries to make his way into and corrupt Hawkins. It should give us a better idea of how exactly Vecna orchestrated the events of Stranger Things’ first three seasons and reveal more of his backstory at both the Hawkins Lab and when he was banished to Upside Down by Eleven. Stranger Things VR is slated to release this fall for Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro and should tide fans over until Season 5, which has been delayed due to the writer’s strike.

Bulletstorm VR was announced

Bulletstorm | Announcement Trailer | Meta Quest 2 + 3 + Pro

One of the most surprising announcements from the show was that Bulletstorm is coming back as a VR game. People Can Fly, the developers of the original frantic 2011 shooter, are working with Green Hill VR developer Incuvo to adapt the PC and console FPS to VR. Like Resident Evil 4 before it, this is a classic, albeit a cult classic, that players will be able to experience from a new perspective in VR. It will be released for Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro later this year.

Asgard’s Wrath 2 launches this winter

Asgard’s Wrath 2 | Official Gameplay Reveal Trailer | Meta Quest 2 + 3 + Pro

As the final reveal of the show, Sanzaru Games Asgard’s Wrath 2, a sequel to one of the most critically acclaimed VR games. Its announcement trailer featured a heavy dose of gameplay, highlighting its intense combat, some puzzles, massive boss fights, and new Eygpt environment. An extended gameplay look following its reveal trailer went into even more detail, showing the new mount system, Godscale puzzles, some of the heroes that players can take control of, weapon customization, an infinitely replayable dungeon crawling mode, and more. Those who pre-order will get a copy of the original Asgard’s Wrath, a sandsea home environment, an Asgard’s Wrath 2-themed character and title in Population One, and some in-game items when the sequel finally releases. Asgard’s Wrath 2 will be released during winter 2023.

Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 — Turbocharged is a shockingly ambitious sequel
A car jumps in Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 Turbocharged

Going into my Summer Game Fest Play Days appointment for Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 -- Turbocharged, I had low expectations. Despite Digital Trends' lukewarm review, I found this game's 2021 predecessor to be a pleasant racing game surprise when it quietly came onto the scene. For a sequel, though, I was just expecting a minor refresh of the tracks and vehicles to be the extent of the upgrade, as can sometimes be the case with racing game sequels. While both of those things still happened here, after playing about a half-hour of Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 -- Turbocharged, I found it to be a surprisingly ambitious evolution of core ideas introduced in the first game.

Most importantly, the player’s moveset has expanded, as the boost meter can now be used to jump in the air and strafe to sideswipe other vehicles, and skills can adjust a car’s handling. Tracks now feel a lot more alive and ingrained into the world around them as you’ll be racing inside and outside, and a new Waypoints mode allows you to explore those hubs more freely. Add on even more features I couldn’t experience during my demo, like the story mode and some new multiplayer modes, and Hot Wheels Unleashed 2 -- Turbocharged has become my most anticipated racing game of the year.
Boost, jump, strafe
Everything that made the original Hot Wheels Unleashed fun returns here. It still has a fantastic sense of scale as you race on Hot Wheels tracks through real-world locales; in fact, that’s only emboldened in these sequels as tracks now go outside and a vehicle’s handling can change depending on what type of terrain the player is on. This is still a very arcade-style racer that rewards drifting and boosting, but there are some remnants of more realistic physics, as you can crash into a wall or fly off the track if you aren’t careful.

Meta Quest+ subscription is the VR version of PS Plus and Xbox Live Gold
Key art for Meta Quest+

The Meta Quest family of headsets is getting their own version of PlayStation Plus Essential or Xbox Live Gold. Called Meta Quest+, this monthly subscription will give its subscribers two VR games to play every month.
Introducing Meta Quest+ | VR Title Subscription
Meta Quest+ will cost $8 a month or $60 a year, although Meta is running a launch promotion where those who subscribe before July 31 will get their first month for $1. With that subscription, you'll get two games each month, which will stay in your library as long as you're subscribed to Meta Quest+. We've already learned which games will be coming to the service in July and August.
In July, Meta Quest+ subscribers will gain access to Pistol Whip and Pixel Ripped 1995. Pistol Whip is a pretty iconic VR game that mixes FPS and rhythm game mechanics, tasking players to shoot enemies and dodge bullets to beats of a variety of songs. Meanwhile, Pixel Ripped 1995 is a retro-inspired VR game that will have you playing a bunch of fake 16 and 32-bit games within VR as you follow the story of a kid growing up in the 90s.

In August, the two Meta Quest+ games are Walkabout Mini Golf and Mothergunship: Forge. Walkabout Mini Golf is a VR mini golf simulator that features multiplayer as well as a lot of DLC that features courses based on things like Labyrinth and Journey to the Center of the Earth. Mothergunship: Forge is an FPS roguelike where players must build their own weapons as they fight through the titular ship.
Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro users can now subscribe to Meta Quest+; the Quest 3 will also support it when the headset launches later this year.

The player rides Oatchi in Pikmin 4

With Immortals of Aveum getting a last-second delay, July belongs to Pikmin 4. Nintendo’s next big Switch exclusive looks to bring one of the company’s more eccentric franchises to a console that’s done wonders for oddball GameCube contemporaries like Animal Crossing. It may be the fourth installment of the series, but there’s a good chance it’ll act as an entry point for a fair amount of Switch owners.
