Monster Hunter Rise’s free 3.0 update is coming tomorrow

The Monster Hunter series is having a great run this year with the release of Monster Hunter Rise on the Nintendo Switch, and Capcom is adding to that momentum with new updates. A digital event detailed what’s in store for the game’s 3.0 update and also shared details on Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin‘s Rite of Channeling mechanic.

Monster Hunter Digital Event - May 2021

Monster Hunter Rise is getting a free title update in version 3.0 on May 27. The DLC features new monster encounters, including Crimson Glow Valstrax and Apex Zinogre. The ladder will appear during Rampage quests but can be faced in standard quests as well. This update also adds a new ending to the story, with the monsters Ibushi and Narwa coming together in a new quest.

Version 3.0 will add a myriad of other features such as a new boss battle arena, quests, and weapon trees. According to the update stream, each of these new additions has to be unlocked through unidentified conditions.

The free 3.0 update also brings new paid DLC, which includes hunter voices, pose sets, stickers, face paints, hairstyles, Cohoot outfits, music, and layered armor for hunters Palico, and Palamute.

On the Monster Hunter Stories 2 side, Capcom showed off the game’s Rite of Channeling feature, which is exclusive to the Stories series. This mechanic entails transferring genes from one “Monstie” to another. The system looks similar to the fusion system used in Shin Megami Tensei.

Along with gameplay details, the event teased a bit of the future added content coming to both Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Stories 2. Capcom plans to keep the updates coming for these two titles, with version 3.1 coming to Rise at the end of June with more event quests and DLC. Players will be able to obtain exclusive crossover armors from each title by having a save file of one or the other on your Nintendo Switch console.

There is also an update titled “Capcom Collab 1” coming in mid-June, which will bring costumes and other equipment from other Capcom titles to Monster Hunter Rise and Stories 2. More of these collaborations are set to come in the future.

Monster Hunter Rise released in March and became a great spot for beginners to jump into the series. Players can get the free version 3.0 update on May 27. Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin will be hitting shelves and Nintendo’s eShop on July 9.

Resident Evil Village DLC, Exoprimal, and more headline Capcom Showcase
Ethan Winter's daughter Rosemary sits sadly on a bus in Resident Evil Village Shadow of Rose.

Following livestreams from Sony, Microsoft, and Geoff Keighley, Capcom decided to get in on the video game showcase fun. During its June 13 showcase, Capcom revealed the Shadows of Rose DLC for Resident Evil Village and provided some new looks at its other upcoming games like Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak and Exoprimal.
Capcom Showcase | 6.13.2022
The biggest announcement of the show by far was Resident Evil Village's long-awaited DLC. It stars Ethan Winter's daughter Rosemary, plays out from a third-person perspective, and is fittingly titled Shadows of Rose. It will be released on October 28 alongside the multiplayer Resident Evil Re:Verse and an update for Resident Evil Village that adds new content to Mercenaries mode and a third-person mode to Village's main campaign.
While that was the biggest reveal from the show, we also got a look at plenty of other Capcom games. The showcase started by giving us another look at Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak and revealing a demo for the expansion that launches on June 14. Capcom then reminded players of the release windows for Street Fighter 6, Capcom Fighting Collection, and Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium but didn't reveal much in the way of new info for them. After that, Exoprimal got a brand-new trailer featuring its evil AI, Leviathan. Capcom showed how Exoprimal's PvPvDinosaur matches play out and the Exosuit classes players can choose from, then teased that a Closed Network Test will be held prior to the game's launch.
We also learned that a 10th anniversary Dragon's Dogma stream will be held on June 16 before getting another look at Resident Evil 4's remake. Capcom showed an extended version of the State of Play trailer before showing some new gameplay featuring improved visuals. It looks much more in line with Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3's graphics. The show concluded by revealing that PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of those remakes and Resident Evil VII launch today, June 13.
It was an underwhelming showcase overall, but painted an extremely clear picture of what we can expect from this lauded Japanese publisher over the next year.

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak introduces a vampiric dragon
monster hunter rise sunbreak monsters malzeno

During the Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak digital event, Capcom showed off a brand-new trailer featuring older monsters and new ones. The clip included the expansion's flagship dragon, Malzeno.

Malzeno is a vampiric elder dragon that captures monsters and steals their life force. It also has the ability to inflict the Bloodblight status, which causes hunters to slowly lose their HP in a tug-of-war fashion with it. In order for hunters to regain lost HP due to Bloodblight, it seems like they'll have to keep attacking Malzeno. If a hunter succumbs to Bloodblight, then Malzeno will use the life force to evolve into a more powerful form.

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak refreshes the game in June
Hunters celebrate in the Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak expansion.

Capcom finally gave a thorough overview and revealed a release date for Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak during a digital event today. This major expansion for the Nintendo Switch and PC Monster Hunter game will be released on June 30.
Monster Hunter Digital Event - March 2022
As Iceborne did for Monster Hunter World, players can expect this expansion to introduce plenty of new monsters, characters, and other content for Monster Hunter Rise players to sink their teeth into once they've made their way through the main game. Players must complete the seven-star hub quest "Serpent Goddess of Thunder" to access Sunbreak.
Sunbreak takes place in a new area called The Citadel and gives the player a new base of operations called the Elgado Outpost. From here, players will work with lots of new characters from a distant, Britain-inspired kingdom to take down The Three Lords, the gigantic monsters threatening that foreign civilization.
The Three Lords are Garangolm, a large monster that attacks with both fire and water elements, Lunagaron, an icy fanged wyvern, and Malzeno, an elder dragon. These won't be the only new monsters, as Capcom also highlighted the Blood Orange Bishaten and a new version of Astalosed in the presentation. The expansion will also introduce new Master Rank quests for hardcore players and new wirebug actions.
Alongside the release of Sunbreak, Monster Hunter Rise will receive a massive 13 GB update that will adjust game balance and character edit vouchers in addition to preparing the software for this expansion. Players can also expect amiibo of the "Canyne Malzeno" Palamute, "Felyne Malzeno" Palico, and Malzeno to release alongside the game, these will unlock special armor and let players get items from a daily lottery.
Overall, Sunbreak is stacking up to be a meaty expansion that will please Monster Hunter Rise players. It will cost $40 for those who already own Monster Hunter Rise, though new players will be able to pick up the Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak Set for $70.
Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak will be released for both Nintendo Switch and PC on June 30, 2022, though Capcom teased that the expansion will get plenty of updates following its release
