Monster Hunter Wilds is coming in 2025

Surprising absolutely no one, Capcom is continuing its hit Monster Hunter series. This new entry is Monster Hunter Wilds, which looks like a continuation of Monster Hunter World that will bring a plethora of changes along with it. The title was confirmed as the final announcement of this year’s Game Awards.

With next year marking the 25th anniversary of the Monster Hunter series, many speculated a new game was on the horizon. It’s unknown just what separates this new Wilds entry from the rest of the Monster Hunter  franchise, but based on the snippet of gameplay we saw during the trailer, we can expect the classic main formula to make a return with one big change. The environments in which players will hunt in this new game appear to be the biggest that the series has ever seen.

The trailer showcases the player character riding on the back of a monster through a crowd of creatures while being chased by two even larger monsters. It ends by showcasing the character flying across the sky and looking out to a giant open field. An interview with series producer, Ryozo Tsujimoto revealed that this entry will feature “a new level of detailed creatures and ecosystems.”

While there is no exact release date as of yet, Monster Hunter Wilds is confirmed to launch in 2025. As such, hunters have tons of time to finish up their journeys in Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter World before the next adventure in the monster world begins.

Monster Hunter Wilds regions are twice as big as World’s, with no loading screens
A hunter fights two monsters at once in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Monster Hunter Wilds is shaping up to be a major upgrade from Monster Hunter World. I have learned that the maps players will explore in Monster Hunter Wilds are going to be twice as big as the ones in Monster Hunter World -- and they won't even feature loading screens while accomplishing that. I saw a hands-off preview of the game at Summer Game Fest Play Days and could instantly recognize the greater scope of Monster Hunter Wilds.

The game looks beautiful and the desert world Capcom showed was lively, with small birds living in trees to herds of monsters roaming the landscape. Quests could be started by just attacking monsters, and completing a quest didn't kick the hunter back to base or force any sort of loading screen. I spoke to some of the developers behind it and was left stunned by what could be one of the most impressive games to release during this console generation.
A seamless hunt
"Seamlessness" is a big keyword at the center of both Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Wilds, according to Capcom.

This surprising Capcom game is the best thing I played at Summer Game Fest
Two warriors in Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess.

While Monster Hunter Wilds might not be getting released until next year, Capcom still has another awesome-looking game releasing very soon. Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess impressed me with its Summer Game Fest 2024 trailer, and after going hands-on with the game, I'm even more in love. It's a super-weird action strategy game where players free mountain villages of the "Defilement" that has overtaken them by strategically placing helpful villages and fighting the enemies, called "Seethe," head-on.

Think of it as an isometric Onimusha with tower defense elements, as players can strategically command and place villagers to optimally defend the dancing maiden that is helping get rid of the defilement that has overtaken the mountain. Although Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess can be a tough game to explain, after going hands-on with it, the game became my favorite thing I played at Summer Game Fest Play Days this year. After also speaking to the development team to learn more, I think we're all in for something special when Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess launches next month.

Monster Hunter Wilds announces crossplay during Summer Game Fest
A hunter leaps at a Monster in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Monster Hunter Wilds got a fresh trailer during the Summer Game Fest live stream, and crossplay was confirmed.

Host Geoff Keighley was joined on stage by series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto to talk more about what fans can expect from Monster Hunter Wilds. While on stage, Tsujimoto mentioned, "I hope players look forward to playing with their friends across different platforms when the game launches simultaneously in 2025." Crossplay is a huge step forward for the franchise, as both Monster Hunter: World and Monster Hunter Rise had issues with staggered launches and the inability to play with friends on other systems.
