Fatality! Mortal Kombat X PC patch pulled after deleting save data

Mortal Kombat X PC
We think Mortal Kombat X is a ton of fun, but the game was a bit of a mess when it arrived on the PC. Plagued by issues at launch, there were problems with online multiplayer even after the initial wrinkles were smoothed over. Developers NetherRealm Studios and High Voltage promised a patch, and sure enough, the patch arrived yesterday.

But after eager PC gamers downloaded the patch, many of them immediately wished they hadn’t. While it did indeed deliver many of the improvements to Mortal Kombat X that NetherRealm and High Voltage Software had promised, the patch did so with some relatively harsh side effects.

Players quickly began reporting that their save data was being destroyed by the patch. After downloading, players would launch the game, only to find that all of their progression within the Krypt had been deleted. Needless to say, these fans weren’t very happy.

The patch was quickly pulled, though not before it had done its damage. “We are temporarily removing the patch until we can pinpoint the cause of save data loss,” reads a brief message on Steam. “We are actively working on this and will keep everyone posted as we work towards a fix. We sincerely apologize for this disruption.”

The loss of hours of progression is bad enough, but that it came after downloading a nearly 16GB patch adds insult to injury. A Change.org petition was quickly started, demanding refunds or some other kind of restitution. If save loss was the only issue, the petition might seem unwarranted, but the PC version of Mortal Kombat X suffers from many more issues than console versions of the game, and is regarded by many as the worst version of the game.

A new version of the patch is expected to launch later today, according to Eurogamer. In the meantime, if you haven’t yet bought the PC version of Mortal Kombat X, you may want to hold off for a while.
