MultiVersus brings Warner Bros. characters to Smash Bros.-style platform fighter

Warner Bros. Games revealed its take on the platform fighter genre today with a trailer for MultiVersus. It pits iconic WB characters, from Batman to Tom and Jerry, against each other in Smash Bros.-style brawls. The game, which will include crossplay, is set to launch next year and will be free to play.

MultiVersus will emphasize social cooperative play, or duos as it’s typically called in other platform fighters. In duos, two teams of two take each other on, with the team that comes out on top typically chaining together complex combos. MulitVersus is trying to deepen that theme by giving characters moves that are geared toward teammates first and foremost. Batman, for instance, can throw a smoke bomb to obscure his allies, and Steven Universe can throw his shield to protect his partner. It’s a stark difference from Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, which was released earlier this year and is geared toward competitive solo play.

As a free-to-play game, MultiVersus will also constantly be updating. The game’s current roster, which also includes Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, Arya Stark, and Adventure Time‘s Finn and Jake, will grow as the game is supported post-launch. Surprisingly, the game also features some of the most recognizable names in voice acting reprising their roles. John DiMaggio returns to voice Jake the dog and Kevin Conroy reprises his role as Batman for the game.

It seems like players will be able to customize characters’ move sets to some extent. The trailer goes over the perks for one character, which appear to be swappable.

MultiVersus is set to release sometime in 2022 for PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

MultiVersus Season 2 key art

MultiVersus season 2 has just begun, and Warner Bros. Games and Player First Games have announced a couple of new additions to the game: Marvin the Martian and a new stage based on Game of Thrones.

Marvin the Martian is the third Looney Tunes character to be added to the MultiVersus fighters roster after Bugs Bunny and Taz -- or fourth if you include LeBron James from Space Jam: A New Legacy. The polite alien will come with his trademark Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator explosive device, powerful blaster, and spaceship-summoning abilities. His full move set will be revealed at a later time.

All the free characters in MultiVersus right now
A large group of DC and Warner Bros characters stand together in MultiVersus.

Taking a page from other free-to-play games with large rosters, such as League of Legends, MultiVersus gives players multiple ways to experiment with new characters. Without playing to earn enough gold to completely unlock a character, you can always play the full roster in training or local modes. However, that won't be the way most people want to play, and with more and more characters planned to come to this crossover fighter, even the most dedicated players will have trouble earning enough currency to unlock them all.

That's where the rotation of free characters becomes so valuable. MultiVersus rotates which characters in its roster are free for everyone bi-monthly, or every two weeks, with the current offering being four free characters at a time. Here are the characters you can play as, free of charge, right now.

Black Adam comes to MultiVersus alongside arcade mode
A pixelated version of Black Adam flashes on the screen of a MultiVersus arcade machine.

After two months of waiting, DC's Black Adam will finally join the battle on MultiVersus later this week. And in a shock to fans (literally and figuratively) he's also bringing Arcade Mode to the game with him.

Warner Bros. Games and Player First Games released a teaser trailer on Twitter last night of a 1980s-style TV commercial showing a MultiVersus arcade machine and Black Adam showing up on the screen in pixel form to the sound of thunder before the lightning causes a blackout. As shown in the banner for Season 1, the Black Adam that will come to the game is based on the comic books, not the DCEU version played by Dwayne Johnson in the latest film, Black Adam.
