Oddworld Inhabitants is reborn for the PS4! But maybe not Microsoft’s new Xbox…

Oddworld Inhabitants came very close to being a household name in the video game world. It’s a studio with a signature style as recognized as Rockstar Games. It’s first two games Oddworld: Abe’s Odyssey and Oddworld: Abe’s Exodus sold more than 2 million copies (major sales at the time) on the PlayStation back at the end of ‘90s, and that’s not counting PC sales.

It never came to pass, however, and after a decade of botched exclusivity deals, canceled projects, and sour grapes, Oddworld mostly just disappeared. But after a couple of promising HD re-masters, the studio is back and banking on the PlayStation 4 for its future. What’s most surprising though, is that Oddworld not only isn’t preparing future games for the Next Xbox, it doesn’t even know any details about the console.

“Now we’re working on PS4 and are incredibly excited by that prospect for the future,” Oddworld development director Stewart Gilray told Games Abyss, “We’ve had no communication at all with Microsoft on their new system, so I really can’t comment on that at all. But PS4 seems like a fantastic system, we’ve had kits for a while, and it is as people say, incredibly easy to develop for, as it is a lot closer to a PC system than ever before. Some of the ides Sony have for the way it all works are truly inspiring and we are happy to be working with them again.”

How things change. Oddworld’s downward spiral last decade was in part caused by the company’s shift away from developing for PlayStation and PCs to focus exclusively on Xbox, starting with the Xbox launch title Munch’s Odyssey. According to co-founder Lorne Lanning, this was because the PlayStation 2 wasn’t a capable enough system for what the studio wanted to make. This partnership with Microsoft ended when the next game came out in 2005, Stranger’s Wrath, which was published by Electronic Arts. When the game failed to find an audience—Lanning said that EA “sabotaged” the release—Oddworld was set to close as a games studio. The studio was reborn in 2010 when studio Just Add Water approached Lanning about making an HD re-master of Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath, which turned out excellent.

It’s no surprise that Oddworld Inhabitants isn’t actively seeking a new partnership with Microsoft on the Next Xbox. In addition to the bad blood left over from the beginning of the ‘00s, Just Add Water went through a miserable process trying to get Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath on Xbox 360, even after Microsoft approached the studio to make the game.

Amazon’s ambitious MMO New World is finally coming to PS5 and Xbox this October
Key art for New World Aeternum.

Amazon is finally bringing its MMO New World to consoles this October, and that’s coming as part of a larger rework of the fantasy game called New World: Aeternum.

When New World hits consoles on October 15, it will also add crossplay, so you can group up with your friends on different platforms. That said, it won’t feature cross-progression, as the characters you make will be locked to whatever platform you made them on. The controls and UI have also been reworked to function better with a controller, and Amazon Games expects New World to keep update parity across all three platforms starting this October.

3 new PS Plus games to play this Memorial Day weekend (May 24-27)
Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Memorial Day is coming up, so you're probably wondering what games you should play on your PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 over the holiday weekend. Lucky for you, a new batch of games were added to the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra game catalog earlier this week, and it brought plenty of games well worth your time. Three in particular stand out to me; download them today and try them out over the next few days.

The first is a Western from Rockstar Games that needs little introduction and is a must-play if you haven't experienced it yet. The next is an open-world game that kick-started a new series for Ubisoft and turns 10 next week. Finally, a retro PlayStation 1 game that just came to PlayStation Plus Premium offers up a good time if you enjoy sports or racing games.

Fallout 4 is finally getting free Xbox Series X and PS5 upgrades
New Fallout 4 Creation Club mod content coming with the Xbox Series X and PS5 launch.

Bethesda has confirmed that the current-gen update for Fallout 4 will finally release on April 25.

That's good timing, as a Fallout TV show just released on Amazon Prime this month to positive buzz. Fallout 4 came out for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox One in 2015, and this definitely looks like it will be the most substantial update the game has received since its last expansion was released.
