Get the original Doom and Doom II free by pre-ordering the Xbox One version of Doom

Doom isn’t out for a few more months yet, but if you just can’t wait, what better way to kill some time than by blasting your way through the pixelated demons in the original versions of the game? That’s assuming you’re playing on the Xbox One, and you’ve pre-ordered the game.

As initially hinted at by a listing in the Australian Xbox One Store, both the original Doom and Doom II will be available for free to those who pre-order the new DoomIGN has now confirmed. Pre-order buyers should get codes for the games, which can be redeemed on the Xbox website, via the Xbox Message Center within seven to ten days.

These are the Xbox 360 versions of the game, made available via backward compatibility, which explains why those pre-ordering on PlayStation 4 aren’t getting the game bonus. Both games were released on the PS3 as Doom Classic Complete, but aren’t currently available to PS4 gamers via PlayStation Now.

Pre-ordering the game also gets buyers the Demon Multiplayer Pack, which offers a — what else — Demon-themed armor set with three skin variations. Six metallic paint colors are included, as well as three id Software logo patterns which can be used on armor and weapons. Six Hack Modules, one-time use consumable perks, are also included.

If that isn’t enough, the Doom Collector’s Edition is still available. For $120 you’ll get the game and the above multiplayer bonus, as well as a 12-inch tall statue of a Revenant from the game, which sits on an LED-lit base complete with a slow spinning turbine.

The original Doom might have been released in 2013, but it’s still a blast to play, and the Xbox 360 ports of the game got generally good reviews. Unfortunately, these versions can’t support mods, so playing the new level that John Romero released last month on your Xbox One is out of the question.

Doom has seemingly been in development forever, but earlier this month a release date of May 9 was finally revealed. The game is available for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and of course the platform that gave birth to the Doom legacy, the PC.

Xbox Game Pass is killing pre-orders — and that’s a good thing
Games on Xbox Game Pass.

A recent survey on Windows Central polled readers on their pre-order plans for Halo Infinite. Out of nearly 300 responses, two-thirds said they didn't plan to pre-order the game. However, nearly half the respondents said that they planned to play the game on Xbox Game Pass, and multiple respondents who pre-ordered the game said they planned to play it on Game Pass, too.

Game Pass is helping lead the charge to kill pre-orders. Although that may not be a good thing for retailers and publishers, it's great for gamers -- especially as more titles ship in broken states after suffering delays. Although pre-orders will inevitably stick around for a while, they're becoming obsolete, and Game Pass is a driving force behind that.
Pre-orders are bad for the people who matter
