OtterBox’s new Xbox mobile gaming accessories signal a cloud gaming revolution

OtterBox is entering the mobile gaming arena with a suite of accessories designed with Xbox Game Pass in mind. The new line of products signals what could be a breakout year for cloud gaming.

OtterBox’s gaming gear offers a thorough setup for mobile players. The products are primarily built around Xbox controllers, starting with an Easy Grip Controller Shell. The add-on features rubberized, antimicrobial grips that snap onto both the Series X and Elite Series controllers. The grips are swappable and designed to reduce sweat.

The company’s new mobile gaming clip is compatible with Xbox controllers. It’s a three-talon clip that accounts for different side button layouts across devices. The actual clip can be removed from the controller attachment, turning it into a table stand.

Players can grab a carrying case that’s custom molded to fit Xbox controllers in their grips and with the gaming clip still attached. The water-resistant case features a cable passthrough for easy controller charging and a built-in smartphone stand on top of the case.

OtterBox is also introducing a new phone case designed with gaming in mind. The iPhone case features a thermal pad that dissipates heat away from the phone to help keep it cool during technically intense games. The company also created new privacy glass that’s designed with landscape orientation in mind.

Looking at everything together, OtterBox has put together a multiproduct portable gaming solution that accounts for a wide range of uses. While companies have put out accessories like gaming clips in the past, OtterBox is upping the ante by creating a full product ecosystem for mobile players.

The robust offerings indicate that the phone case company has high expectations for cloud gaming in 2021. The timing of the partnership with Microsoft is especially notable considering that the company’s cloud gaming service will roll out to iOS this spring. Both the phone case and screen are built for iPhones specifically, with OtterBox saying it plans to roll out Android options eventually.

While the products mostly seem built for Microsoft’s big iOS launch, OtterBox noted that this is only the beginning of its dive into the gaming space. The company plans to expand its portfolio to other partners

In our 2021 gaming predictions, we noted that this year would mark a significant step forward for cloud gaming. Between Amazon Luna, Google Stadia’s iOS launch, and Microsoft’s impending expansion in the space, it seems that companies are making serious investments into mobile gaming and see it as a viable option. OtterBox’s somewhat left-field involvement shows that even those outside of the gaming industry see a trend coming and are preparing for a boom.

Pre-orders for OtterBox’s gaming line begin on January 25, with products expected to go on sale in mid-February.

Xbox Games Showcase and Starfield Direct: how to watch and what to expect
xbox june showcases announced starfield direct hero image 37faabd65d647fb77b68

The Xbox Games Showcase and Starfield Direct Double Feature are shaping up to be the most important video game showcases to watch this month. Across these two back-to-back showcases today, Microsoft will give us a comprehensive look at what's coming to PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox Game Pass from its first-party studios and then finally give us the deep dive into Starfield that we've been waiting for since it was announced in 2018.
Because Sony has already held its PlayStation Showcase and Nintendo hasn't revealed any plans for a Nintendo Direct this month, it looks like this will be the big first-party showcase of June. With the presentation happening later today, we're laying out how you can watch the Xbox Games Showcase and Starfield Direct Double Feature and explaining what you can expect from it.
When is the Xbox Games Showcase

The Xbox Games Showcase will begin at 10 a.m. PT today, June 11. Microsoft has not said how long the Xbox Games Showcase will be this year, but previous presentations have typically been between an hour and an hour-and-a-half long.
When is the Starfield Direct
Microsoft has stated that the Starfield Direct will begin "immediately following the Xbox Games Showcase." Because we don't know how long the Xbox Games Showcase is, though, we don't know exactly when this portion of the livestream will begin. We also don't know quite how long the Starfield Direct will last. To be safe, we recommend you set aside two or three hours to watch the Xbox Games Showcase and Starfield Direct Double Feature.
How to watch the Xbox Games Showcase and Starfield Direct
Microsoft is promoting and live-streaming this pair of showcases across most of its gaming-focused social media platforms. As such, you can tune into the shows on Xbox's official YouTube, Twitch, and Facebook pages as well as Bethesda's YouTube and Twitch channels. Deaf fans can even experience the show thanks to a version of the show on YouTube with audio descriptions and stream on the XboxASL Twitch page.

All cross-platform games (PS5, Xbox Series X, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC)
Two squads of heroes clash in an Overwatch 2 trailer.

Cross-platform support is becoming more important in the world of video games. Multiplayer hits like Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 and Fortnite have pushed crossplay into the limelight, and now most AAA multiplayer games release with at least partial cross-platform support. Finding every cross-platform game is no easy feat, though, so we did the hard work to bring you a comprehensive list of games that support crossplay.

Unfortunately, there aren't any rules when it comes to crossplay, so each game handles the feature a little differently. To make matters more confusing, certain backward-compatible games on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X still support crossplay on the most recent hardware, even if there isn't an official release for that hardware.

Xbox Games Showcase can succeed where the PlayStation Showcase struggled
Senua stares ahead wearing war paint.

If there’s one video game presentation happening over the next week that has the most to prove, it’s the Xbox Games Showcase. Despite a strong start to the year with Hi-Fi Rush and a solid Developer Direct showcase, Microsoft’s gaming branch has floundered in recent months because of struggles with its acquisition of Activision Blizzard and the rocky launch of Redfall. With the Xbox Games Showcase and Starfield Direct Double Feature, Microsoft must reconfirm its commitment to gaming and to releasing high-quality first-party exclusives.

That said, Xbox is in an excellent position to do just that because of Sony’s underwhelming May showcase. As the first major gaming presentation of the summer, Sony had the chance to “win” the whole game reveal season early with its PlayStation Showcase. Ultimately, that live stream proved disappointing because of its focus on CGI reveal trailers and live service games.
