Overwatch’s CG shorts offer an alternative to traditional game narrative

Blizzard’s Overwatch has often been compared to online shooters such as

Team Fortress 2, eschewing a single-player campaign in favor of a more robust multiplayer offering. However, anyone who has followed the studio knows that world-building is extremely important to its success, and although Overwatch may not feature a campaign or traditional “story” mode, a series of animated shorts have done a wonderful job of getting players accustomed to the game’s characters.

The first of these, dubbed “Recall” and released in late March, focuses on the gorilla scientist character, Winston.

“The conflict between Omnics and humans has now claimed over 15,000 lives. So far, the international community has been reluctant to intervene,” a newscaster says as Winston debates initiating the “Overwatch Recall,” which would open him up to prosecution.

The short then rewinds time, showing Winston as a young ape and revealing when he got his rectangular spectacles.

This is material that, in a traditional single-player game, would likely be presented in the form of cutscenes, and probably much more brief to keep the player’s attention. When they’re put on YouTube, the 8-minute run time is much less of a concern.

The second short, “Alive,” was just released this past weekend, and showcases an intense battle between mascot character Tracer and the mysterious assassin Widowmaker. It appears to take place before “Recall,” as the opening shows an excited Tracer watching an Omnic speak about a continued peace with the humans, only to be interrupted when she spots Widowmaker on the rooftop. What follows is an intense firefight showcasing Tracer’s time-bending abilities, which unfortunately ends with the death of the Omnic leader — it’s on now.

If you want to know even more about the universe of Overwatch, Blizzard is also planning a series of “digital comic shorts” that offer background information on more of the main characters, including the six-shooting McCree. A graphic novel, Overwatch: First Strike is also releasing later this year.

Overwatch is out for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on May 24.

The best heroes in Overwatch 2
D.Va with cherry blossom background

With the release of Overwatch 2, the cast of selectable heroes has ballooned to over 30 distinct characters spread between the three major roles. Even for veteran players, this leaves a ton of abilities, tactics, counters, and compositions to try and keep straight. If you're a new player, the choices will easily feel overwhelming. It can be simple enough to narrow down what class of hero you want to focus on, whether it be Tank, Support, or Damage, but even within those boundaries, you have a ton of variations.

While your mileage will certainly vary on which hero you consider to be "best," and the game's meta will shift with any update and balance changes, there are always going to be a select few that are top-tier for that time. As of the current state of Overwatch 2, these are the best heroes you should at least consider for each role, which we will update as the game's meta adjusts and changes over time.

Junker Queen holding a shotgun and axe in Overwatch 2.

Overwatch 2's rocky post-launch saga continues as the game is suffering from a bug that randomly purchases skins from the in-game shop without permission from players while they're using the chat.

As reported by Kotaku, some players pointed out the auto-purchasing bug to Blizzard after the game's tumultuous launch on Tuesday. The issue appeared to gain more traction Thursday evening when Reddit user Dracyoshi made a post in the Overwatch subreddit detailing their experience of buying the Junker Queen skin without meaning to because they typed text chat in the Hero Gallery.

Overwatch 2 Sojourn guide: abilities, strategies, counters, and more
Sojourn uses an ability in Overwatch 2.

The most exciting part of any Overwatch update, or in this case sequel, is the new heroes. Overwatch 2 launched with not one, but three brand new heroes across its three classes to expand the already impressive roster. The cast of Overwatch was already quite diverse in terms of design, but also how each hero functioned, with unique abilities, strengths, and roles in the competitive shooter. The new additions for Overwatch 2 include Sojourn, Kiriko, and Junker Queen.

Damage heroes are generally the most popular of the three main roles. They are the most offensive-focused and allow players to get into the action directly with high-powered weapons and abilities. Sojourn fits the bill in this regard, but like every class, has a set of abilities that make her shine differently than the others. If you want to master this Damage class hero, here's a full guide on Sojourn for Overwatch 2.
