Forget math. Parents now pay ‘Fortnite’ tutors to improve their kids’ skills

It’s pretty common for parents to pay for their children’s piano or tennis lessons, but what about paying for them to get better at video games? Tutors are now offering their services to help kids improve their Fortnite skills, and parents have been more than willing to pay up.

A new report from The Wall Street Journal profiled several parents who paid hourly rates to get their children lessons with Fortnite tutors, who promised to improve their skills. Using a freelance labor website, Ally Hicks, who lives in Winchester in the U.K., found a tutor for her 10-year-old son. In exchange for $50, the tutor provided him with four hours of Fortnite lessons.

The trend has caught on in the United States as well, with father Nick Mennen paying a $20 hourly rate for his son to receive lessons. He hopes his son’s improved skills will eventually earn him a scholarship.

Parents have also begun taking the lessons themselves, in order to improve their skills enough to compete alongside their kids. We’re not sure if that will ruin Fortnite for the kids, but they’ll undoubtedly move on to the next big thing eventually.

Gaming scholarships are actually a real thing in 2018, and Ohio’s Ashland University even includes Fortnite as one of the games you can use to get a discount on tuition. Other games eligible for scholarship include Overwatch, League of Legends, and even Rocket League. We’re pretty sure Psyonix didn’t envision its game being used to get kids into college, but it’s a happy accident.

Esports are beginning to receive similar recognition and support as traditional sports, with cable channel ESPN even broadcasting the finals of The Overwatch League in July. The network will continue to broadcast footage from the league’s second season in 2019, and we’re betting that other video games will also see support. Fortnite will likely be among them, and with Epic Games continuing to offer new content updates on a regular basis, the company is unlikely to see player counts fall anytime soon.

Fortnite is available now for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac, and iOS, with an Android version on the way.

What is an Epic weapon?
Fortnite uses a rarity system with its weapons, which are denoted by colors. Purple weapons are Epic, but keep in mind you can utilize any weapon of higher rarity to complete this quest. As long as the weapon is at least Epic, you'll earn credit for surviving storm phases.
How to get an Epic weapon

There are several ways to get Epic weapons. One way is to simply find one from chests or as floor loot, but this isn't as reliable. You can also purchase Epic weapons from NPCs around the map. Nearly all main hubs have an NPC who sells weapons, so be sure to talk with them if you have the funds. Using an Upgrade Station is another solid option for collecting an Epic weapon, though it's expensive. Another option is to defeat the Highcard Boss found at Brutal Bastion, Shattered Slabs, and Mega City. Upon defeat, the Highcard Boss drops a Mythic Havoc Suppressed Rifle.

How to give specialist a command in Fortnite

As part of Fortnite's Spring Breakout Daily Quests, players are tasked with giving a hired specialist character a command. Of course, the game doesn't specify how to do this exactly, leading to some confusion amongst the community. Thankfully, we've got everything you need to know about completing this new quest with ease in Fortnite.
How to hire a specialist

Specialist Characters are specific NPCs all around the map. If you pull up the quest itself, you'll actually see a map of all the Specialist Characters. Keep in mind that not all NPCs fall into this category, so be sure to look at the map. We like the one to the very north of Breakwater Bay as it's usually out of the way. Once you find them, you'll need to pay 200 Gold Bars to hire them. If you don't have the funds, be sure to play more and complete bounties as needed.
How to give a character a command
After you've hired the Specialist Character, they'll be on your side for the duration of the match. If you look at the top left side of the screen, you'll see an icon that represents the Follower Communications wheel. Press and hold left on the D-pad on console or the middle mouse button on PC to get this menu to appear. Once it does, you can pick from a list of commands such as wait or follow. To complete the quest, you simply need to issue one command and after the NPC does what you ask, you'll earn credit for completing it.

Unfortunately, there isn't a way to guarantee getting a Guardian Shield, as they appear as random drops from chests across the map. With that in mind, we suggest visiting high-traffic areas that contain lots of chests -- preferably spots with Oathbound Chests. These are the large white chests that contain rarer loot and can be found in main hubs that aren't covered in snow, such as The Citadel. Regular chests yield Guardian Shields, too, though. We had luck finding them at Lonely Labs, but other areas contain the Guardian Shield, as well. You can also pick one up from eliminated enemies.
