In news that will probably surprise no one, Pokémon Go has become the app with the highest number of downloads during its launch week on the Apple App Store. Since its debut on July 6, the wildly popular app has skyrocketed to the No. 1 spot on both the free and top-grossing charts, and is showing absolutely no signs of slowing. Because really, you’ve just gotta catch ’em all.

As The Loop reported, Apple confirmed Friday that “the game has set a new App Store record with more downloads in its first week than any other app in history.” These numbers are even more impressive when considering that Pokémon Go was rolled out gradually across the world, and has only just been released in Japan, the game’s nation of origin.

First appearing in Australia, Pokémon Go is now available in nearly 30 countries, and there seems to be a truly universal appeal to the game. Nintendo has enjoyed a rising stock price thanks to the app’s success, and because you can make in-app purchases within the free game, there’s plenty of revenue being generated on behalf of both developers and Apple. In fact, 9to5Mac reports, Apple’s 30 percent revenue share in the game could be worth $3 billion in the next couple years.

Of course, the resounding success of the game hasn’t been entirely without its costs. The game has been blamed for a number of dangerous situations, including a car crash, the discovery of dead bodies, and more. There have also been complaints about the locations of some of these Pokémon, with representatives from both the Holocaust Museum in the District of Columbia and the 9/11 Memorial in New York City asking that game enthusiasts refrain from playing on those grounds.

All the same, the Pokémon craze is here in earnest, and according to Apple’s numbers, it looks like it’s here to stay.

Forget about the iPhone 16. New iPhone 18 details just leaked
The back of the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Apple has just announced the iPhone 16 series, handsets that will not even be released until tomorrow. However, we now have possible news about the iPhone 18 coming from Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst with a good track record when it come to Apple rumors.

According to Kuo, some of the 2026 iPhone models will likely be equipped with a 2nm chip, which will make them even faster and more efficient than chips found in earlier models. The news isn’t all good. The lower-end iPhone 18 models are expected to feature 3nm processors again, and you will have to pay extra for the 2nm ones, which may only be available in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Google’s Find My Device app is copying a helpful iPhone feature
Someone using Find My with an iPhone 15.

Google's Find My Device network is still a work in progress, with features being added slowly. According to 9to5Google, an important feature that could arrive soon has proven crucial to its chief competitor, Apple, with the Find My app on the iPhone.

In the latest version of the Find My Device app for Android, v3.1.148, Google has set what’s being called a “foundation” for a compass feature -- just like Apple's Precision Finding tool.

iPhone 16 preorders are live, and I just did something ridiculous
An official photo of someone holding the iPhone 16.

This morning, at 5 a.m. PT/8 a.m. ET, Apple officially opened preorders for the new iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. When I went to bed last night, I had successfully not set up a preorder ahead of time and fell asleep proud of myself for not having bought the shiny new iPhone.

However, 20 minutes after preorders went live today, I caved. But I didn't get the highest-end iPhone 16 Pro Max or the smaller, but equally capable iPhone 16 Pro. I didn't even get the iPhone 16 Plus for its bigger screen and (likely) excellent battery life. Instead, I preordered a base model iPhone 16 for the most ridiculous reasons.
Why I preordered the iPhone 16
