The Prince of Persia remake has shifted developers

While some may have forgotten that a Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake is still being developed, Ubisoft announced a switch in its development team. The very long-awaited and indefinitely delayed game is now being developed by Ubisoft Montreal after being worked on by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake originally was revealed in September of 2020 with a trailer that showed off the game’s updated art style and features. It showed off cutscenes, voice acting, and even some gameplay. Since then Ubisoft went radio silent on the title with most announcements being the fact that it wouldn’t be shown off at various events, such as E3, throughout 2021.

The Sands of Time remake initially had a release date of January 21, 2021. Soon after that announcement, the title was pushed back once more to March 18, 2021. After that hold-up, the game was given an unspecified delay and with today’s report, it seems that that indefinite delay may last that much longer.

Ubisoft isn’t the only company struggling with a development team switch dilemma on top of an indefinite release. Nintendo’s Metroid Prime 4 is still a sore point for fans as it’s been years since it was first announced and delayed. Like Ubisoft, Nintendo switched the entire development team for Metroid Prime 4, and fans have heard nothing of the game since.

The development process that the teams at Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai reached is unknown, as is why exactly Ubisoft Montreal was brought in to finish the project. Digital Trends reached out to Ubisoft for further comment and will update this article when it responds.

Saber Interactive, the game developer and publisher behind highly anticipated upcoming games like the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, is reportedly being sold by its parent company, Embracer Group.

Bloomberg reports that Saber Interactive will be sold to private investors for "up to $500 million." Saber Interactive has several subsidiaries, including 3D Realms, 4A Games, Aspyr Media, New World Interactive, Tripwire Interactive, and Zen Studios, but it's unclear how many of those it will retain ownership of after being sold at this time as Embracer Group and Saber are declining to comment on the deal. Embracer Group originally acquired Saber in February 2020, and it served as one of the company's primary operating groups.

So, you’ve unlocked a new ability in a Metroidvania. You know that it could help you get to a previously inaccessible area, but you don’t quite remember exactly where that area was on the game’s expansive map. It’s a common feeling when playing the genre and an issue that games have been trying to solve for years. That frustration is what inspired the creation of the Memory Shards system in Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which provided a salve to this problem by enabling players to pin screenshots of certain obstacles on their map.

At any time while walking around Mount Qaf, players can press down on the D-pad to leave behind a Memory Shard that pins a screenshot to the map. Later, after gaining a new ability or just increasing or mastering a platforming skill, Memory Shards quickly remind players where they can use the skill they just learned. There is a finite number of Memory Shards that players can pin, but more can be found via exploration. It’s the kind of engaging Ouroboros-style game design that provides a sturdy backbone to an engrossing Metroidvania.
