Of, by and for the players: Sony puts next month’s free PlayStation 4 game up for vote

Sony is giving PlayStation 4 owners the chance to vote for which of three games launching next month will be available for free as part of the platform’s PlayStation Plus lineup.

The three games scheduled to make their PlayStation 4 debuts next month are Armello, Grow Home, and Zombie Vikings. Runners-up will be available at a discount for PlayStation Plus subscribers.

This month’s poll kicks off a new initiative that gives PlayStation Plus members control over which free PS4 games will be offered on a monthly basis. PlayStation 3 and PS Vita offerings are still being determined by Sony itself.

“The game with the most votes will automatically be included in our future free game lineup for PlayStation Plus,” Sony stated last month. “If your pick didn’t make the lineup, don’t worry. In the first promotion, PlayStation Plus members can get the runners up at a discount. We love to listen to our fans — and we’re super excited to launch this promotion.”

Armello, the first of next month’s freebie contenders, is “a grim fairytale board game” from indie developer League of Geeks. Previously released for PCs and mobile platforms, Armello packs significant depth and strategic possibilities across its included local and online multiplayer modes.

Also up for consideration is Ubisoft’s Grow Home, a low-poly sandbox game that takes a cute robot character on “a procedurally animated vertical platforming adventure.” Another PC-ported contender, Grow Home, will make its console debut for the PlayStation 4 next month.

Zombie Vikings rounds out this month’s picks, offering side-scrolling hack-and-slash action with an undead Norse aesthetic. Its creator, indie studio Zoink!, previously produced the multiplatform point-and-click adventure game Stick It to the Man.

To choose next month’s free game, PlayStation Plus subscribers must submit their votes via the PS4’s PlayStation Store application. Voting begins on August 13 and ends August 24 at 8:30am PDT.

Sony revealed a large and varied batch of games coming to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium this month. Its headliners are Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, a true PS5 exclusive that utilizes the system's technology for visually impressive and seamless rifts between areas and worlds, and Humanity, a quirky new puzzle game launching day one on PS Plus Extra.
Rift Apart is a must-play for PS5 owners, so it's a good thing that Sony has finally made the decision to add it to its subscription service. Some great indie titles like Rain World and Lake, as well as the full Tomb Raider and Dishonored series, will also be available on PS Plus after May 16.
On the classic games front, it's a PSP-dominated batch, with Logan's Shadow completing the Syphon Filter series' presence within the PlayStation Classics collection.
A lot of good games, including Marvel's Spider-Man, are leaving PlayStation Plus on May 15, so it's good to know that a lot of other interesting games will be hitting the service on the same day. 3 big things I need to see from the next PlayStation Showcase

It’s that time of the year again when industry insiders are teasing that a big PlayStation Showcase will happen around June. A third-party focused State of Play happened in 2022, but now Video Games Chronicle’s Andy Robinson and Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb are both suggesting that a more first-party oriented "Showcase" could be on the way sometime during the next month, potentially during the week of May 25.
PlayStation has had a rough start to 2023, with console exclusive Forspoken garnering mixed reviews, the PlayStation VR2 impressing critics while underperforming in sales, and The Last of Us Part 1’s PC port being broken at launch. With only Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 confirmed to be on the horizon for 2023, Sony has a lot to prove during its next showcase. There are three specific things I need to see from Sony if that PlayStation Showcase does come to fruition.
Give PSVR2 purpose
The PlayStation VR2 is an impressive piece of virtual reality technology, but it lacks killer apps outside of Horizon: Call of the Mountain. New game releases for the headset have been slow since its February 2022 launch, which is likely why the $550 headset has underperformed. Sony has opted to mainly relegate PSVR2 to State of Plays or PlayStation Blog posts, but it needs to revitalize excitement for the platform by giving some of its games a spotlight in a big PlayStation Showcase.

Hopefully, there’s more on the way in terms of new AAA VR exclusives from first-party studios, as well as much-demanded ports like Half-Life: Alyx. Already announced PSVR2 games like Journey to Foundation and Synapse could also use release dates. A PlayStation Showcase is the perfect time for Sony to put out a clear road map for PSVR2’s future game library, just as the September 2021 PlayStation did for PS5. Give me a reason to strap on that headset yet again.
Flesh out the system’s 2023 exclusives lineup
PS5 needs a strong lineup for this fall as well. With the exception of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, things look pretty barren for PS5 this year after the launch of Final Fantasy XVI. Several previously announced PS5 games still lack concrete release dates and could arrive in the second half of this year. It’d be nice to get a clearer picture of Sony’s PS5 game lineup for the rest of the year; hopefully, it includes titles like Stellar Blade, the Silent Hill 2 remake, Lost Soul Aside, Death Stranding 2, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Media Molecule is ending live support for Dreams, its highly ambitious game-creating and playing tool for PS4, on September 1. Its servers are staying online for now -- and it has a few more content updates in the pipeline before then -- but after August, there will be no new tools, ports, or events for Dreams. That means it’s not coming to PS5, PlayStation VR2, and, most critically, PC.
