During today’s PlayStation State of Play presentation, Capcom revealed Resident Evil 4 remake and that it will launch on March 23, 2023. The title will also get PlayStation VR2 content.

The game will be heading to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. It won’t be exclusive to PlayStation platforms, and it is seemingly leaving the previous generation behind.

The first trailer for the game didn’t show too much, but it did include a lot of atmospheric shots that show off the game’s visual upgrade compared to the GameCube original. It also shows glimpses of protagonist Leon along with Ashley, whom Leon rescues in the game. Additionally, there are shots of Castle Salazar and the various enemies that inhabit it. The trailer ends with a sneak peek of Lord Osmund Saddler, the leader of the religious Los Illumnados cult and main antagonist.

He ominously says, “You’ll receive our most sacred body. It begins… now.”

Furthermore, Capcom also revealed that Resident Evil Village will be getting PlayStation VR content too. Players will be able to experience the entire campaign, including the notable Castle Dimitrescu. It will also take advantage of PlayStation VR2’s eye-tracking, 4K display, and PS5’s 3D audio.

This time around, players can also execute more dynamic movements and actions. For example, protagonist Ethan Winters can hold up both a knife and a gun in each hand, something he couldn’t do before. Ethan can even dual wield weapons as well, such as having a handgun in one, and a shotgun in the other.

According to reports, the Resident Evil 4 remake could be scarier than the original that was released back in 2005.

Doom: The Dark Ages launches next year, and Xbox is bringing it to PS5
Doom: The Dark Ages Doomslayer

During the June 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft revealed Doom: The Dark Ages. It's a medieval take on the first-person shooter series that's typically set during contemporary times. It's set to launch in 2025 for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. The game will also launch on Xbox Game Pass.

Doom: The Dark Ages is a prequel, with the Doomslayer donning animal fur and spikes on his shoulder-blade armor. With his trusty and classic shotgun, he's ready to take down demons. However, he now has a new shield with blades that he can rev up like a chainsaw. The trailer shows the Doomslayer even throwing his shield at them like Captain America. He will also be able to ride a dragon at some point in the game, highlighting the fantasy elements of the game.

You’ll be able to play Phantom Blade Zero multiple times this summer
Phantom Blade Zero protagonist Soul

During Summer Game Fest 2024, developer S-Game showed off a new gameplay trailer for Phantom Blade Zero, an upcoming action-RPG. A release date wasn't revealed, but the game will be playable at certain upcoming events.

One aspect to note is that the gameplay trailer was all captured in-game, so what was shown is accurate to what the game will look like when playing it. Phantom Blade Zero appears to be a Soulslike game with an emphasis on parrying, similar to games like Rise of the Ronin and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Its monster design and gray color palette tones are reminiscent of Bloodborne.

Behemoth blends Skyrim and Shadow of the Colossus into one VR epic
One of the title characters in Behemoth looms in an image from the upcoming game.

Skydance Games has something big on its hands with Behemoth, an upcoming fantasy action VR title for Meta Quest 2 and 3, PlayStation VR2, and PC VR. And when I say “big,” I’m talking about its titular Behemoths themselves. From the first person perspective of the lead character, standing near the base of those beasts has a way of making you feel very small by comparison. But that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to fight them, and the entire plot of the upcoming VR game hinges on their defeat.

Digital Trends was recently invited to Skydance Games’ office in Santa Monica for a hands-on demo of Behemoth. Shawn Kittelsen, vice president of creative for Skydance Interactive, was there to walk me through the demo, which takes place about three hours into the game. According to Kittelsen, the area explored in the demo will be populated with more enemies in the final game. But in order to keep the demo to just 45 minutes, some subtractions were made. In the short time that I had to play, I got a taste for what feels like a promising cross between Skyrim VR and Shadow of the Colossus.
Slaying the Behemoths
Behemoth is a first-person VR adventure with an emphasis on sword-swinging combat and light exploration. Both Skyrim and Shadow of the Colossus are apt comparisons because Behemoth thrusts the players into a dark fantasy realm and puts them into the mountainous terrain of the cursed Forsaken Lands. The player character is a mighty warrior who has also been cursed, and the only way to cure the land is to rid it of the Behemoths.
