Rockstar Games lays out the ‘GTA Online’ launch and future plans

silly class action lawsuit grand theft auto 5 dismissed gta online

GTA Online will allow up to 16 players to run amok in a slightly rewired version of the story mode’s open world Los Santos and Blaine County, Rockstar confirms in a post on its Newswire blog. The October 1 launch of Grand Theft Auto V‘s multiplayer component will allow players to participate in a variety of activities from the main game – everything from tennis to armored car robbery to races – as well as mode-specific “Jobs” that appear to place an emphasis on co-op play. All of that is of course in addition to the usual madness and mayhem that a typical GTA player inflicts on the virtual city. Imagine what 16 at once will do.

The post admits up front that the early days of GTA Online are expected to be… challenging. “One thing we are already aware of, and are trying to alleviate as fast as we can, is the unanticipated additional pressure on the servers due to a significantly higher number of players than we were anticipating at this point,” the announcement notes. “We are working around the clock to buy and add more servers, but this increased scale is only going to make the first few days even more temperamental than such things usually are.” Rockstar cites recent issues with GTA V‘s iFruit companion app and the developer’s Social Club community hub as examples of the increased strain.

We can also now confirm that GTA Online will indeed offer in-game cash for purchase via microtransactions, backing up earlier reports. “The game and its economy have been designed and balanced for the vast majority of players who will not buy extra cash. There is no in-game paywall and nothing that should disrupt the balance of the game,” the announcement reads. “The economy is balanced differently from the single player economy, and cash earned in one cannot be taken over to the other. Most players will earn cash much faster Online than in Story Mode.”

Rockstar closes the announcement post with a brief description of how it plans to grow GTA Online with free post-release updates. Among the upcoming additions are: the Content Creator hinted in the initial GTA Online trailer that allows players to build deathmatch arenas and races; a Beach Bum pack that adds “4 new amazing beach fun vehicles, over 300 new items of incredible down tempo leisure wear and 2 new but not remotely relaxing weapons”; a team-based Capture the Flag mode with included support for the Content Creator; and co-op Heists, complete with the story mode’s Planning Boards added to player apartments.

How to sell cars in GTA 5
Grand Theft Auto 5 Screenshot_361

There are a lot of ways to make money in the world of Grand Theft Auto V, but none are more apt that stealing and selling cars. Not only is it a pastime befitting its namesake, it's also a fun way to earn a few bucks while roaming the streets of Los Santos. There's just one way to sell cars in GTA 5, but thankfully, offloading your stolen goods is a very straightforward process.
Steal a car
Before you can even think about selling a vehicle, you're going to have to get your hands on one. Common cars will sell for at least $1,000 each, but it's worth your time to seek out expensive luxury and sports cars. Here's a good rule of thumb to follow -- the nicer the car looks, the more valuable it usually is. We've had good luck finding expensive vehicles on the streets around Rockford Hills, but head to any upscale shopping area and you're bound to see a few.

Once you've found your vehicle of interest, simply hijack or hot-wire it and evade the police. Try to do as little damage to it as possible, since cars in better condition fetch a higher price. Most of the time, you can simply speed down the road and find a quiet hiding spot in an alley to shake the low-effort manhunt. As soon as the coast is clear and you have no stars, you're ready to offload your new ride.

The fastest cars in GTA 5

Half the fun of Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online is cruising around Los Santos in lightning-fast supercars. There's no shortage of incredible vehicles available to players, but trying to figure out which is the fastest isn't as straightforward as you'd think. Some might dominate in a drag race, yet end up in a ditch if you put them on a winding track. Others might excel around hairpin turns, but lack in overall horsepower. The following list is based strictly on each car's top speed, as trying to rate other traits -- such as handling and cornering abilities -- is highly subjective and up to personal preference. While we eagerly await a new fleet of cars to steal and race in Grand Theft Auto 6, here are the 10 fastest cars in Grand Theft Auto V.

4 video game news stories that shaped the industry’s future in 2022
Living room with Microsoft Xbox Series X (L) and Sony PlayStation 5 home video game consoles alongside a television and soundbar.

With the video game industry in constant growth mode, it's rare we ever get through a year without some massive bombshell announcement with huge implications for the future. In 2021, for instance, we saw Epic waging war against Apple’s business practices, Valve disrupting hardware with its Steam Deck announcement, and a harrowing Activision Blizzard scandal that acted as a tipping point for the industry and its often difficult working conditions.

The news didn’t slow down in 2022 -- if anything, it escalated. The Activision Blizzard revelation in particular had something of a snowball effect this year, rolling its way into several major threads. Between high-profile acquisitions and a push for unionization, this year very much felt like a direct continuation of 2021. Nothing was a one-off story, but rather part of a historical moment that could make the 2020s the most pivotal decade in gaming history when all is said and done.
