Secret of Mana series collection coming to Nintendo Switch in Japan

Square Enix is bringing a compilation of its classic action RPGs to the Nintendo Switch in June, bundling the Super NES hit Secret of Mana alongside its predecessor and sequel as part of the upcoming Seiken Densetsu Collection.

The compilation, currently slated to launch exclusively in Japan, includes playable versions of the original Seiken Densetsu (aka Final Fantasy Adventure), 16-bit follow-up Seiken Densetsu 2 (aka Secret of Mana), and its Super Famicom successor Seiken Densetsu 3. Series fans hailing from North America and Europe may want to keep their expectations in check, however, as Seiken Densetsu Collection is not yet slated for a stateside release.

Though Secret of Mana remains a favorite among fans of SquareSoft’s 16-bit output, the series suffered from a fractured release history outside of Japan. The original Game Boy game in the series was translated as Final Fantasy Adventure for its stateside release in 1991, leaving no trace of its lineage.

Seiken Densetsu 2 later hit the Super NES in North America and Europe in 1993 as Secret of Mana, but despite the game’s devoted following, SquareSoft chose not to localize its 1995 sequel Seiken Densetsu 3. Instead, the publisher opted to promote a mechanically similar but otherwise unrelated action RPG, Secret of Evermore, leaving Secret of Mana‘s official sequel stranded in Japan.

The Seiken Densetsu series spawned many follow-ups and spinoffs in the years afterward, including Legend of Mana for the original PlayStation and 2003’s Sword of Mana for the Game Boy Advance. A remake of the original Seiken Densetsu was recently released for the PlayStation Vita and mobile platforms under the localized title Adventures of Mana.

While Seiken Densetsu Collection for the Nintendo Switch has not been announced for release outside of Japan, Square Enix’s willingness to translate the recent Adventures of Mana indicates that a localized series compilation release may be in the works. If Seiken Densetsu Collection fails to materialize in the west, fans have the option of importing the Japanese release, as Nintendo Switch software is not region-locked.

Nintendo confirms that Switch 2 and a June Direct are coming

Nintendo has finally confirmed two important things that people were speculating about. First off, we learned that another Nintendo Direct showcase will be taking place this June. More importantly, Nintendo finally confirmed that it is working on a Nintendo Switch successor and said we'd learn more about it within this fiscal year.

This all came from a statement by President Shuntaro Furukawa on Nintendo's corporate X (formerly Twitter) account. "We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015," the post confirms. "We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation."

Visions of Mana paints a promising picture of the RPG series’ return

The vibrant settings and character designs in Visions of Mana instantly alerted me that I'd be knee-deep into fantasy, riding on the back of a giant black wolf into the grassy plains of Fallow Steppe. A lush landscape welcomed me as I chatted with my teammates on top of my mount and tussled with little woodland monsters.

I had this experience at this year's PAX East, where I went hands-on with a demo of the upcoming RPG. I never played previous Mana games, but I have enough experience with RPGs and real-time combat to name it one of the most gorgeous, action-packed games I played at the show. The shiny open-world and slick combat I experienced point to a strong comeback for the Mana series coming later this summer.

Mother 3 is finally on Nintendo Switch … but only in Japan

Mother 3, the highly requested cult-classic RPG for the Game Boy Advance, is set to appear today on the Nintendo Switch Online service. But there's a catch: It's only available in Japan.

North Americans were first introduced to the Mother series under the name Earthbound on the SNES in 1995. As was common at the time, the game was renamed for the West in an attempt to avoid confusion. In 2006, a third entry was released in Japan for the GBA simply called Mother 3, but it has never had an official translation for Western audiences. Both Mother 2, aka Earthbound, and the original Mother, renamed Earthbound Beginnings, have been added to Nintendo Switch Online, but there has never been any indication that the third game would receive the same treatment.
