PS Plus subscribers will get Shadow Of The Colossus for free in March

Sony has announced the next batch of freebies available to PS Plus members, and the new offerings include a classic. PlayStation 4 owners will have access to Shadow of the Colossus and Sonic Forces in March via their subscription.

Shadow of the Colossus is an exciting addition for longtime Sony fans. The beloved PlayStation 2 game received a high-definition remake in 2018, which modernized the game’s graphics. Subscribers will receive the new version of the game for free, as long as they remember to add it to their library while it’s available.

For Sonic fans, 2017’s Sonic Forces will be available to download in March. The game, which was somewhat overshadowed by Sonic Mania when it came out and received middling reviews from critic, features a customization option that lets players create their own character.

Sonic Mania was previously offered as a PS Plus freebie in June 2019.

Sega seems to be trying to capitalize on its franchise’s momentum following the recent success of the Sonic The Hedgehog film. Microsoft recently revealed its Games With Gold lineup for March, and it includes Sonic Generations. Xbox fans are getting the better end of the deal, as Generations is one of the series’ more positively received games.

Games With Gold members can also claim Batman: The Enemy Within, Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 in March. They can only be downloaded by players with an active Xbox Live Gold subscription.

The PS Plus titles will be available to download on March 3. As always, subscribers will need to add the games to their library in order to keep them. Players will have until April 6 to claim their games.

As an added bonus, subscribers will gain access to a Predator: Hunting Grounds trial weekend starting on March 27.

In the meantime, PS Plus players still have a chance to claim February’s games. Bioshock: The Collection and The Sims 4 are currently available until March 2. PS Plus has loaded players up with classics in recent months. Subscribers got the Uncharted Collection in January and The Last of Us Remastered in October.  Shadow of the Colossus is another essential library addition for players who are looking to complete their collection of landmark PlayStation games.

PlayStation Plus just set a new first-party precedent with Horizon Forbidden West
Horizon: Forbidden West

Sony revealed the games coming to PlayStation Plus Premium and PlayStation Plus Extra this month on February 21, and it's the best month that the service has had since it launched in the summer of 2022. Not only are some great PS1 classics like The Legend of Dragoon and Wild Arms 2 coming to the service, but Horizon Forbbiden West is getting added as well.
Horizon Forbidden West coming to the service one year after launch is a big deal because Sony has been resistant to putting recent first-party PS5 games on its subscription service. While it's still not adding first-party titles on day one like Xbox Game Pass does, this is possibly our first indication of how Sony will handle adding its own games to the subscription. It's not the only PS4 and PS5 title coming to the service this month either, as the following strong lineup of games was also confirmed to be coming on February 21.

The Quarry (PS4, PS5)
Resident Evil VII Biohazard (PS4)
Outriders (PS4, PS5)
Scarlet Nexus (PS4, PS5)
Borderlands 3 (PS4, PS5)
Tekken 7 (PS4, PS5)
Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown (PS4)
Earth Defense Force 5 (PS4)
Oninaki (PS4)
Lost Sphear (PS4)
I Am Setsuna (PS4)
The Forgotten City (PS4, PS5)
Destroy All Humans! (PS4)

PS Plus adds Evil Dead, OlliOlli World, and more in February
A still from Evil Dead: The Game showing a man holding a gun in a supermarket.

PlayStation Plus Essential's February game lineup was announced today, and it consists of four titles: OlliOlli World, Evil Dead: The Game, Mafia: Definitive Edition, and Destiny 2: Beyond Light. These games will be available to download starting February 7. Overall, this is a really solid batch of games.

OlliOlli World was one of my personal favorite games of 2022 because of its amazing level design and 2D skateboarding gameplay that only becomes more fun as you get better with the game. "Like the best games of the genre, it knows that easy-to-learn-but-hard-to-master mechanics, rewarding obstacles, and high speeds that test one’s reaction time are the hallmarks of a great platformer," I wrote in a four-and-a-half star review of the game last February.

PS Plus’ 2022 revamp could use a revamp of its own in 2023
Playstation 5 system and DualSense controller.

In 2022, the way we access video games radically changed. Xbox Game Pass became accessible on TVs without a console, Logitech took a stab at cloud-focused hardware, and the Steam Deck made PC games accessible from anywhere. Services were instrumental to some of those changes, as companies looked to hook players with a monthly subscription rather than pushing them to buy individual games. When Sony announced it was revamping its PS Plus service earlier this year, it felt like a big piece of that industrywide transformation was about to fall into place.

That’s not exactly what happened. Rather than emerging as Sony’s answer to Game Pass, the new PS Plus landed with a thud when it launched earlier this summer. Its selection of launch games underwhelmed potential subscribers and Sony struggled to build momentum with subsequent additions. In fact, the service lost 2 million subscribers post-revamp. It’s a bit puzzling considering that PS Plus functionally costs as much as Game Pass annually and has a larger library overall. So why is there such a chasm in public perception between the two?
