The 5 best deals from Sony’s Annual Days of Play gaming sale

Sony’s annual Days of Play gaming sale is going on right now. And once again, the company and its retail partners are offering a ton of deals on a variety of games and accessories.

This year’s Days of Play event, which will be held through June 17, is a decidedly different experience. In previous years, Sony has held the event to coincide with the annual E3 gaming conference. But with E3 canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, Sony is pressing ahead without any additional support from one of the industry’s biggest events.

To its credit, however, Sony hasn’t phoned it in on this year’s sales. It’s offering steep discounts on PlayStation Plus subscriptions, a host of deals on popular games, and steep savings on headsets.

Check out our roundup of the five best Days of Play sales from this year’s event. And keep in mind that while Sony is offering the deals in its PlayStation Store, Amazon, GameStop, Best Buy, and other retailers are also participating.

Death Stranding

Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding was a polarizing title when it hit store shelves last year. Some found it to be overwritten and boring. Others, however, say the game, which took up to 50 hours to complete, delivers a unique experience you simply can’t find elsewhere. Either way, it’s worth trying. And right now, it’s available for $30 — a $30 savings off its regular $60 price tag.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Game of the Year Edition

If you’re a Marvel fan and you haven’t yet played Spider-Man: GOTY Edition, now’s the time. It’s a little older (it launched in 2018), but still holds up nearly two years later. It features outstanding gameplay, reliable controls, and a refreshingly solid plot. Even if you’re not a Marvel fan, you can enjoy the game for what it is: Fun. It’s available now for $20, down from its regular retail price of $40.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

After years of disappointments, the Call of Duty franchise surged back to life last year with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The game features gorgeous graphics, an impressive campaign, and online gameplay that continues to get better. Even if you’re late to the game, Modern Warfare‘s Season 4 will be released in a matter of days, allowing you to jump in on day one. The game typically goes for $60, but you can get it now for $45.

A driver holds a wheel in a car in Gran Turismo 7 VR.

Gran Turismo was the most dominant PlayStation franchise at CES 2023, appearing twice during Sony's January 4 press conference. We not only got a first look at the upcoming Gran Turismo movie, but learned that Gran Turismo 7 will get PlayStation VR2 support as well.
During the press conference, Sony confirmed that more than 30 games will be available for PlayStation VR2 at launch, including Horizon Call of the Mountain, No Man's Sky, and Resident Evil Village. In addition to a Beat Saber port, Sony also announced that Gran Turismo 7 will get a free update to add PlayStation VR2 support when the headset launches on February 22. We also saw some gameplay footage of Gran Turismo 7 for PlayStation VR2, which showed an impressive amount of detail as a player drove from a first-person perspective.

While video game and VR fans will love that announcement, that wasn't even the series' first appearance at the show. Series creator and producer Kazunori Yamauchi appeared earlier to introduce the series, highlight the GT Sophy racing AI, and tease the Gran Turismo movie. We then learned more about the film as Sony Picture's Sanford Panitch, PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbash, and movie Director Neill Blomkamp took the stage.
They discussed PlayStation's growing efforts in the entertainment industry and how the Gran Turismo movie will follow the story of a gamer who goes from playing Gran Turismo in his parent's basement to a professional racer. The film just finished shooting, and Blomkamp took time to explain how the Sony Venice 2 camera's detachable sensor allowed them to get unusual Imax resolution shots. We then got a first look at the film in a sneak peek video:
GRAN TURISMO – Exclusive Sneak Peek
While the movie's appearance alone would have been a strong showing for this franchise, Gran Turismo reemerged during the PlayStation VR2 segment of the press conference. If you're a Gran Turismo fan, CES 2023 was certainly a treat for you! Gran Turismo 7 gets PlayStation VR2 support on February 22, while the Gran Turismo movie will hit movie theaters this August.

PlayStation VR2: specs, release date, launch games, price, and more
Playstation VR2 headset on a PlayStation-themed wallpaper.

Sony was the first of the console manufacturers to really give virtual reality a shot when it made the first PlayStation VR unit for the PlayStation 4. While impressive for the price, there were a lot of drawbacks: Players didn't like having to use controllers from the PS3 generation, the camera tracking wasn't great, and the resolution left much to be desired. Despite all of that, PS VR ended up being one of the bestselling headsets on the market.

Seeming to take all the lessons learned from the PS VR, as well as looking at what advancements other headsets have made, Sony unveiled the new PlayStation VR2. Initially just a blog post, Sony has slowly been trickling out more and more information on the upcoming addition to the PS5. Some of the major questions we have are still up in the air, but there is plenty of information floating around to get excited about. Here's everything we know about the PlayStation VR2 (PS VR2).
