The PS5’s DualSense controller just got a bit more expensive

If you’re looking for a new DualSense controller, you’ll have to leave a bit more room in your budget. It seems that Sony has raised the price of most of its DualSense models without an official announcement.

The changes were instead spotted by Wario64, a popular gaming account on X (formerly Twitter), which noticed that the DualSense price has gone up by $5 across multiple online retailers, including PlayStation Direct, Best Buy, and Target. PlayStation has not publicly confirmed the price hike, nor has it released a blog post about the reasons behind it as it has in the past.

This increase applies to almost all DualSense controllers as well. So while standard DualSense options — including some color variants — now cost $75, special-edition options that were already $5 more, like the Sterling Silver or Astro Bot controllers, are now priced at $80. On the other hand, it looks like the DualSense Edge has retained its $200 cost. It was already a niche, premium controller thanks to its highly customizable nature, so it was unlikely to see a price hike to begin with.

There have been price increases across the PlayStation brand. The PlayStation 5 Slim, released late last year, didn’t change much from the launch model besides the size, but the discless version still jumped from $400 to $450. The PlayStation Plus subscription service also got a major price hike in 2023, with the priciest Premium tier going from $120 to $160 per year. This was done so the company could “continue bringing high-quality games and value-added benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service.”

Earlier Monday, PlayStation announced a nine-minute technical presentation on the future of the PlayStation 5, which many expect to be the official PlayStation 5 Pro reveal. Considering this is a more powerful, specialist console, we can expect it to be more expensive than the regular PlayStation 5.

I took the PS5 Pro for a first test drive. Now I’m a believer
A PS5 Pro that's floating in front of a gray background. It's turned to the side.

At Tokyo Game Show 2024, hundreds of thousands of people gathered to get their eyes and hands on the latest and greatest in interactive entertainment. Digital Trends was there checking out the hottest titles, including Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, Dynasty Warriors: Origins, and The First Berzerker: Khazan (starring industry darling and class clown Ben Starr).

The largest presence at the event may have been Sony, and it was at its booth that I went hands-on with its newest hardware, the PlayStation 5 Pro, for the first time. I put the console through its paces and came away intrigued after seeing the stellar image quality and smooth action for myself. While it may be pricey, this upgrade may be what finally unlocks the graphical promises of this generation.
Tower of power
On the edge of the PlayStation booth is a lit dais surrounded by a velvet rope. Atop it sits a PS5 Pro and the newer, slimmer PS5 base model. There’s a guard keeping watch to make sure no one gets any big ideas. I’m told it’s OK to approach the consoles and look, but not touch. What’s immediately apparent is the Pro is noticeably taller than the updated standard edition PS5. Its height sitting on its stand (which is sold separately) is roughly the same as the original base PS5, though the lack of a disk drive (also sold separately) gives it a skinnier profile.

Ghost of Yotei: release date window, trailers, gameplay, and more
A samurai stares at a mountain.

Ghost of Tsushima was an outstanding game to end the PS4 generation with. Sucker Punch chose to pivot to a new IP far divorced from its past Infamous or Sly Cooper games and focus on a more grounded and historically influenced game about the Mongol invasion of the island of Tsushima. Naturally, we all expected a continuation of the story since that was just one small component of that conflict. Indeed we will get another entry, but not in the way we all expected. Ghost of Yotei has been revealed and is making some big changes, but also holding true to what Sucker Punch believes to be the core of the series. Let's follow the wind together to find out all we can about this upcoming PS5 game.
Release date window

For now, all we know is that Ghost of Yotei is expected to come out at some point in 2025. Considering the game has no specific window, we would predict this means it is likely coming in the second half of the year and likely be PlayStation's big fall or winter release. Once we know more, we will update you.
