Sony acquires Firesprite, developer behind Playroom games, The Persistence

Sony is growing its list of PlayStation studios once again with the acquisition of Firesprite, the U.K.-based developer behind The PlayroomThe Playroom VR, and The Persistence. The purchase of Firesprite, announced through a post on the PlayStation Blog, marks the third of this summer for Sony.

Firesprite’s acquisition by Sony is also one of the largest to date. Although the developer isn’t a household name, it’s sizable, with over 250 employees. Comparably, London Studio and Media Molecule, Sony’s two other U.K.-based developers, have fewer developers than Firesprite combined.

In a statement posted on the PS Blog, Firesprite founder and managing director Graeme Ankers spoke on the studio’s history with Sony and what’s next. “Now, as a first party studio,” said Ankers, “we know we have the full support of PlayStation in furthering our heritage of combining creativity and technical innovation to offer some truly unique experiences for PlayStation fans.”

It’s not immediately clear what role Firesprite will play for Sony going forward though, whether it’s as a developer or something more targeted. Just this summer the company purchased both Housemarque, the studio behind Returnal, and Nixxes Software, a developer with years of experience porting console games to PC. With Housemarque likely continuing to make its own games and Nixxes purchased with the express intention of porting PlayStation games to PC, it’s not clear which role Firesprite will fall into. Considering the company’s experience with PS VR though, it’s possible that the first game we see from Firesprite will be for Sony’s next-gen PS VR system.

This week is full of announcements for Sony, which is hosting a PlayStation Showcase at 1 p.m. PT on Thursday, September 9. The 40-minute-long presentation will “include updates from PlayStation Studios and some of the industry’s most imaginative developers, for games releasing this holiday and beyond.”

This console generation isn’t about games or hardware. It’s about services
A character stands below a ship in Starfield.

It’s been over two years since the start of the current console generation, which launched with a rocky start at the end of 2020. You'd think it's been more than long enough to understand what it's all about, but for many, there's still confusion. That might be changing this year. As Tomas Franzese wrote earlier this month, 2023 could be the year where we finally see what games define this generation’s consoles, at least in terms of exclusives. He also noted that games could stop being cross-platform, launching on just current-gen consoles instead of simultaneously on last-gen ones.

While that'll finally give us some memorable games, it doesn't bring us closer to defining the hardware itself. Besides a few extra teraflops and new ultra-fast SSDs, there isn’t much that helps the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S stand out from their predecessors. Sure, the PS5 looks like a giant spaceship, and the Xbox Series X is built like a fridge, but we didn’t know what these devices could offer that the PS4 and Xbox One couldn’t besides some pretty lighting effects and virtually non-existent loading times.

CES 2023: Gran Turismo 7 is coming to PS VR2 as a launch game
A driver holds a wheel in a car in Gran Turismo 7 VR.

Gran Turismo was the most dominant PlayStation franchise at CES 2023, appearing twice during Sony's January 4 press conference. We not only got a first look at the upcoming Gran Turismo movie, but learned that Gran Turismo 7 will get PlayStation VR2 support as well.
During the press conference, Sony confirmed that more than 30 games will be available for PlayStation VR2 at launch, including Horizon Call of the Mountain, No Man's Sky, and Resident Evil Village. In addition to a Beat Saber port, Sony also announced that Gran Turismo 7 will get a free update to add PlayStation VR2 support when the headset launches on February 22. We also saw some gameplay footage of Gran Turismo 7 for PlayStation VR2, which showed an impressive amount of detail as a player drove from a first-person perspective.

While video game and VR fans will love that announcement, that wasn't even the series' first appearance at the show. Series creator and producer Kazunori Yamauchi appeared earlier to introduce the series, highlight the GT Sophy racing AI, and tease the Gran Turismo movie. We then learned more about the film as Sony Picture's Sanford Panitch, PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbash, and movie Director Neill Blomkamp took the stage.
They discussed PlayStation's growing efforts in the entertainment industry and how the Gran Turismo movie will follow the story of a gamer who goes from playing Gran Turismo in his parent's basement to a professional racer. The film just finished shooting, and Blomkamp took time to explain how the Sony Venice 2 camera's detachable sensor allowed them to get unusual Imax resolution shots. We then got a first look at the film in a sneak peek video:

While the movie's appearance alone would have been a strong showing for this franchise, Gran Turismo reemerged during the PlayStation VR2 segment of the press conference. If you're a Gran Turismo fan, CES 2023 was certainly a treat for you! Gran Turismo 7 gets PlayStation VR2 support on February 22, while the Gran Turismo movie will hit movie theaters this August.
