Insomniac shows off ‘Spider-Verse’ suit coming to Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Insomniac Games showed off Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales‘ new suit based on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. As you’d expect, it comes with its own animation style, as well as comic book sound-effect bubbles.

A new 11-minute video shows the suit in action, and it looks like it’s plucked directly from the film. While wearing the suit, Miles’ movements mirror those seen in the film. The animation is executed at a lower frame rate than the game to simulate the animated film’s style.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse production designer Justin K. Thompson explains that the suit mimics the film’s method of “animating on twos.” That’s a technique where every frame of an animation is actually used twice, cutting down on the number of drawings needed per second. For instance, if it’s running at 24 frames per second animation, only 12 unique drawings are used.

The suit also adds comic book style pop-ups when the player hits an enemy. The video shows Miles punching a group of enemies as sound-effect words like pow and thwack appear on-screen in word bubbles.

The suit is available as a bonus for anyone who pre-orders the game on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5. Insomniac says that the suit will eventually be available to everyone at a later date. Players who pre-order will also receive the T.R.A.C.K. suit, created by Marvel artist Javier Garrón.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales will give fans plenty of choices when it comes to Spidey suits. Insomniac recently showed off a new costume that gives players an adorable bodega cat, which can also attack enemies, as a companion. The game launches alongside the PlayStation 5 on November 12.

We haven't heard much about Marvel's Spider-Man 2 since it was first announced with a teaser trailer. All we knew was that it would launch sometime in 2023. According to developer Insomniac, we now know it'll launch in time for the holidays, barring delays.

PlayStation’s Spider-Man cameos in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer
best ps4 exclusives marvel s spider man 1080p wallpaper 2

In a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo, Insomniac Games' version of Spider-Man appears in the new trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
In the trailer, we get a look at a hub where dozens of different versions of Spider-Man are hanging out and working together. This is where you can see what appears to be Insomniac's version of Spider-Man, as he is walking and talking to another Spider-Man in a black-and-red suit. The suit design is slightly different, with red patches on its legs, but otherwise, this character looks just like the Spider-Man from 2018's PS4 game. Could this be our first look at new versions of Peter and Miles' suits in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, or is Sony Pictures Animations just taking some creative liberties? Only time will tell.

It's unknown if Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will reference or set up this appearance. It's unlikely that Insomniac's Spider-Man will have much bearing on the narrative of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse -- chances are that this is little more than a cameo. Lots of Spider-Men will appear in this film, and a bunch of them are seen chasing Miles at the end. Twitter, in particular, seems pretty happy that the Spider-Man Unlimited version of Peter Parker is seen chasing Miles. Regardless, it's cool to see one of the most recent video game interpretations of the character represented in a Spider-Man film.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will hit theaters on June 2, 2023. Meanwhile, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is slated to be released for PlayStation 5 sometime next year. A page for the game appeared on the PlayStation Store earlier this week, but was taken down.
