Splatoon 3 crosses over with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet for next Splatfest

Splatoon 3 is collaborating with Pokémon to host a special Splatfest to commemorate the upcoming release of Pokémon Scarlet and Violetin November.

Like previous Splatoon 3 Splatfests, the latest one will feature three teams competing for Turf War dominance over the course of a weekend. The November Splatfest will utilize that tri-team setup in a clever way: by letting teams choose their favorite Pokémon starter type. Players can either choose team Grass, Fire, or Water. They’ll get a matching shirt to represent their respective team. The competition kicks off on November 11 before the release of the new Pokémon installments.

It’s one thing to stress over choosing a good starter Pokémon, but figuring out which Pokémon type is the best is a debate that has inflamed schoolyards and internet forums for 25 years and some change. The Splatoon Pokémon Splatfest might be the safest venue to settle once and for all whether Fire-type, Grass-type, or Water-type Pokémon are better and more powerful than the other.

This is the first crossover event for Splatoon 3, but it’s already the game’s third Splatfest. The first one was a classic battle of Rock vs. Paper vs. Scissors, while the most recent one asked players what they would bring to a deserted island. Team Gear won that battle, narrowly beating Team Fun and squashing the underrepresented Team Grub.

The Splatoon x Pokémon Splatfest starts on Friday, November 11, and runs through Sunday, November 13. Special tees based on the event will be sold at Nintendo NY just for the occasion.

Like each mainline game in the series, Pokémon Violet and Scarlet introduce a whole batch of new monsters for trainers to catch. Those include fresh faces like Pawmot and Bombirdier, as well as new Paldean variants of classics like Wooper and Tauros. They even add some new evolutions for old monsters like Primeape and Bisharp.

The Pokémon world is both familiar and yet quite different from our own. On one hand, the existence of all these powerful creatures has created a culture almost entirely focused on catching, training, and battling Pokémon. On the other hand, kids still need to get an education, which is where the Academy comes in. Sure, in past games, your young trainer was free to leave home and travel the world without a care in the world, but in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet,you will be a student first.

While you could completely ignore the Academy once you've finished the tutorial section of the game and are let loose in the open world, there are some great incentives the game doesn't tell you about for attending classes and doing well. There are seven total courses available -- biology, math, history, battle studies, language, art, and home economics -- that each has a midterm and final exam to take. Some do require you to earn gym badges first, but they are all worth completing. While they shouldn't be as hard as a real class, if you want a sneak peek at our test papers, we don't mind you taking a glance to see all the answers in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Learning moves in Pokémon games usually revolves around leveling up and evolving your trusty monsters. At certain levels, they will gain the ability to learn a new move but can only know so many at one time. There are some moves that are special, though, and can be given to Pokémon without them needing to level up. Technical Machines, or TMs, have been in Pokémon titles since the first-generation games Red and Blue. They are back for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, but with a twist.

The new method for acquiring TMs in Scarlet and Violet is called the TM Machine. Ignoring the redundancy of the name, this is a very crucial tool for trainers to get very familiar with on their adventures. It is the only way to give certain moves to your team and keep them in tip-top shape. There are hundreds of TMs in Scarlet and Violet, but if you don't master the TM Machine, you'll never get any of them. Here's a full breakdown of how it works.
