Splinter Cell’s Sam Fisher is sneaking his way into ‘Ghost Recon Wildlands’

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands - Special Operation 1: Splinter Cell | Ubisoft [NA]

Ubisoft’s Splinter Cell series has been dormant since the release of Splinter Cell Blacklist in 2013, but protagonist Sam Fisher is about to make his way into another Tom Clancy game. As part of Ghost Recon Wildlands’ free “Special Operations I” content update, Fisher will be making the trip to Bolivia.

The mission will send Sam Fisher to Bolivia to investigate the leak personally, with the help of the Ghosts already in the region. Presumably, the operation will require a little bit less noise than the Ghosts are used to, which is slightly ironic considering their name.

In the full announcement, Ubisoft revealed the event will be live from April 10 until May 2, and from April 12 until April 15, the game will be free to play — this means even those without a copy of Wildlands can join Fisher on his mission.

A trailer was also released alongside the announcement, packed with Michael Ironside’s voice-over work. Fisher’s sarcasm and dark humor appear to be back in full force after being mostly absent from Blacklist, though his equipment seems to be lifted directly from that game.

You won’t be playing as Fisher in the free mission, but will be assisting him as he infiltrates a “heavily guarded camp.” Upon completing it, you gain access to Fisher’s famous three-lensed goggles, and those who purchase the Year 2 content pass will also receive Splinter Cell-themed guns and Fisher’s karambit knife.

The event also adds the new Echelon class to the multiplayer Ghost War mode. This class uses a sonar pulse to spot hidden enemies as well as weaponry and gadgets inspired by Splinter Cell. It’s available for purchase using the game’s Prestige currency and is also included in the Year 2 pass, where it’s available a week earlier than it is for others.

The inclusion of Fisher in Ghost Recon Wildlands only adds more fuel to the Splinter Cell rumor fire. Last month, an Amazon Canada listing for “Splinter Cell 2018” was briefly made public before being removed. At E3 2017, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot acknowledged the series’ passionate fans and said the company “not forgetting” Splinter Cell, but offered little in the way of concrete details on a sequel.

In 2016, we heard reports that Michael Ironside would be returning to the Fisher role, though this has been the first official confirmation. He was replaced by fellow Canadian Eric Johnson in Blacklist, as the part required full-performance capture and Ironside was already over 60. The decision was met with criticism from fans who viewed Fisher and Ironside as inseparable.

Presumably, Ironside won’t be doing his own stunts if he returns to voice the character in a new game, but he is a method actor.

Ghost Recon Wildlands is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Updated on April 9: Added information from the full announcement, including a new trailer.

Ubisoft will try to save Ghost Recon Breakpoint with huge overhaul, new modes
ubisoft overhauls ghost recon breakpoint overhaul

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint, one of the most disappointing games of 2019, will receive a major overhaul after a disastrous first five months since it was launched in October 2019.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint not only released with various bugs, but it also had a microtransaction system that did not quite fit with the game's mechanics and a tiered loot system that did not sit well with players.

New Atari 50 DLC shows the Intellivision acquisition is already paying off
An Atari 2600+ sits on a table.

Digital Eclipse's Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration is an excellent and comprehensive look back at the company's now classic video game lineup, with games to play and extra content to interact with. So far, it's gotten one DLC: The Wider World of Atari, that added even more titles. Now, it's about to get its second, thanks to an acquisition it made earlier this year.

Atari announced The First Console War on Friday, and it's about, as you can guess, the company's first console war with the Intellivision, although it'll touch on a specific element of it. In the 1980s, Mattel was publishing games on the Intellivision. At some point, it decided to release versions of these console exclusives for its main competitor, the Atari 2600, under the M Network label. There are 19 of these games coming to Atari 50 with The First Console War, which is set to launch on November 8 for PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4 Atari 50 owners.

Is Monster Hunter Wilds cross-platform?
Two hunters ride mounts in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Of all the genres that we think need to be on the list of cross-platform games, hunting games like Monster Hunter Wilds have to be near the top. These are a rather unique style of game compared to the likes of Fallout 76, Genshin Impact, or Stardew Valley. Each of those has cooperative or competitive elements to them that are enhanced by cross-platform support, but nothing like what Monster Hunter Wilds has going on. The game will allow you to call in NPCs to help you on the hunt, but these games are best when you get a group of real friends together and embark on an epic quest to slay a giant beast, scavenge it for parts, and return to camp victorious. Monster Hunter Rise eventually got cross-platform support once it was ported off the Switch, but will Monster Hunter Wilds launch with this feature? Here's what you need to know about cross-platform support in one of our most anticipated upcoming games.
Is Monster Hunter Wilds cross-platform?

Monster Hunter Wilds will only have partial cross-platform support. The good news is that the part that it will have is crossplay, meaning that you and friends on either PS5, Xbox Series X/S, or PC can all hunt together with no issues. This feature can be disabled if you wish, but will be enabled by default to make sure desperate hunters can always find some aid when in need.
