Classic Star Wars PC games Rogue Squadron, Rebel Assault resurface on Steam

Publisher Disney Interactive digs into its LucasArts back catalog this week, announcing that it has released Steam versions of the classic Windows PC games Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D and Star Wars: Rebel Assault I + II.

The two games join an expanding library of ’90s-era Star Wars PC titles available on Steam, including Star Wars: Dark Forces, X-Wing vs TIE Fighter, Jedi Knight, and X-Wing Alliance.

Star Wars: Rebel Assault originally premiered as publisher LucasArts’ first-ever CD-ROM game in 1993. Merging arcade-styled action with full-motion video sequences, Rebel Assault revisits many classic scenes from the original Star Wars film trilogy, including the wintry Hoth battle from The Empire Strikes Back and A New Hope‘s iconic Death Star trench run.

Rebel Assault is notable for its extensive voice acting and its then-innovative use of pre-rendered 3D graphics. Rebel Assault followed up on its initial DOS release with ports for multiple gaming consoles, including the Sega CD and 3DO Interactive Multiplayer.

A sequel, Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire, later premiered for Windows and the original PlayStation in 1995. Both Rebel Assault and its follow-up The Hidden Empire are included as part of Disney’s newly launched digital Steam compilation.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D is an enhanced PC adaptation of a Nintendo 64 aerial combat title from developer Factor-5. Featuring a collection of missions that take place across familiar Star Wars series settings, Rogue Squadron garnered critical praise for its detailed graphics and refined flight mechanics.

Rogue Squadron was an influential hit, and a pair of Nintendo GameCube-exclusive sequels – Rogue Leader and Rebel Strike – premiered in the years after its initial release in 1998.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D and Star Wars: Rebel Assault I + II are available for purchase via Steam for $10 apiece.

Many gaming fans found the news to be a positive step for the franchise, and for good reason. EA has had a troubled history with the series since entering into the deal in 2013. While the change ultimately feels positive, it’s hard to shake the feeling that the rug is getting pulled out on EA just as it was finding its footing.
A new hope
EA and Disney’s Star Wars partnership started off strong enough. In 2015, EA successfully brought back the Star Wars Battlefront brand with a fun multiplayer revival. Players’ good faith was quickly squandered with its sequel, Star Wars Battlefront II. EA implemented an aggressive microtransaction strategy into the game that affected the game’s progression and created a “pay-to-win” environment. Players didn’t need to pony up to unlock paid content, but doing it the old-fashioned way required dozens of hours of grinding.
