It has been more than 12 years since the release of the first SatrCraft game on PC, and finally, after years upon years of delays, the hotly anticipated sequel, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, will be released on July 27th for $59.99. A special edition will also be released that features artwork, a behind-the-scenes-DVD, and a flash drive that contains the original game and its expansion pack, Brood War. The special edition will cost $99.99.
Since its release in 1998, StarCraft has sold over 11 million copies. Developed by Blizzard, the game has been a success on every level, but nowhere more than South Korea where national tournaments are headline news, and a TV channel dedicated to the game broadcasts live matches. Recently, allegations of match fixing shook the Korean gaming community to the core after it was revealed that both players and officials may have been involved in the scandal.
Beyond just the standard bells and whistles you would expect from a sequel that was over a decade in the making (better graphics, bigger maps, etc, etc), developers are boosting of major improvements to the multiplayer game that has already captivated millions, and many of those improvements are based on the direct interactions with fans. Specifics have been kept under wraps, but hands on demos are expected at this year’s E3.
