Starfield’s file size is massive no matter what platform you’re playing on

The file sizes for Starfield finally appeared across some of the storefronts it’s available on now that it’s available to preload. As a result, we’ve learned just how massive the game is.

On Steam, Bethesda recommends that players have 125 GB of space for the game, but Microsoft’s own launcher shows an even bigger PC install size of 139.84 GB for Starfield. That size is only slightly smaller on the console, with the Xbox Store showing me that the game will take up 117.07 GB on my Xbox Series X. It’s now very understandable why Microsoft is launching a 1 TB version of the Xbox Series S around Starfield; still, the game will even take over a tenth of that system’s memory if players aren’t expanding it at all.

This 110+ GB file size across all platforms for Starfield demonstrates just how big Bethesda’s upcoming sci-fi RPG will be. It also follows a recent trend of even single-player taking up gigantic chunks of your game system’s memory. This year alone, we’ve seen Star Wars Jedi: Survivor take up over 130 GB of space on consoles, while Baldur’s Gate 3 clocks in at 125.14 GB currently. As games get bigger with more detail, it’s clear that our gaming platforms will be able to accommodate fewer and fewer games on their SSDs going forward.

At least you can play the game via Xbox Cloud Gaming if none of your platforms can accommodate that file size. Starfield will be released for PC and Xbox Series X/S on September 6. Those who pre-order the Premium Edition will get access on September 1, though.

One of Xbox’s big purchases looks like it’s about to pay off
Barbie rides in a pink car with Candy Crush Saga characters.

With its Activision Blizzard acquisition, Microsoft got access to some highly successful franchises, like Diablo and Call of Duty. It also got more casual, mobile titles, like those from the Candy Crush franchise, thanks to Activision Blizzard subsidiary King. The hope was that it could expand into mobile gaming -- and it looks like players might see the fruits of that labor soon.

Microsoft confirmed to The Verge on Friday that testing has begun on a "browser-based mobile store." It looks like it'll soon be available to Xbox Insiders, according to a post on X (formerly Twitter) from Xbox enthusiast account Klorbrille. The post links to a site that has "mobilestore" in the URL and a "Coming Soon" banner.

You’ll have to wait just a little longer for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
A Stalker from Stalker 2 looks off in the distance with a radioactive symbol behind him.

Upcoming survival game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl has been delayed yet again, but unlike some of its other delays, it's only by around two months. Developer GSC Game World posted a video and statement on Thursday saying the game's release, which was previously set for September 5, will now be November 20. It wrote that the developers want to take the time to fix some bugs (or "anomalies," as it calls them).

The video, posted on YouTube and X (formerly Twitter), says the zone will remain "out of bounds" until that date. The player character then opens their table to see the new date. "Really?" they say. "Again?"

Xbox Live is down, so you can’t sign into your Xbox account

Xbox Live experienced a major sign-in outage Tuesday afternoon that made it impossible to log into your Xbox profile to play games online.

I noticed it after attempting to sign into my Xbox Live account on my Xbox Series X. I got an error message telling me to "try again in a while." A quick glance at X (formerly Twitter) confirmed that I was not the only person to have this issue. "We are aware that some users have been disconnected from Xbox Live. We're investigating! Please follow here and on our status page for updates," the official X account for Xbox Support tweeted.
