State of Decay 3 reemerges with a new trailer, but no release date

During the June 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, Undead Labs showed off a new trailer for State of Decay 3. While the trailer didn’t reveal a release date, it did show some new gameplay. The studio also has a new logo, representing its transition from being an indie studio to an Xbox one.

The trailer shows a desolate world filled with zombies and third-person shooter gameplay. The atmosphere feels much more fantastical and supernatural with its red hues, and is akin to Redfall rather than games with a more realistic tone like The Last of Us or Days Gone.

For the new logo, Undead Labs worked with 51 Eggs, a branding company. The logo looks to be a skeleton key, referencing that its flagship franchise is in the zombie genre. “We wanted to give the creatives we work with a collective identity that transcends zombies,” said studio head Philip Holt on the studio’s website.

Undead Labs was founded in 2009 and partnered with Microsoft to release State of Decay in 2013. State of Decay 2 was released in 2018, and Undead Labs was acquired by Microsoft shortly after. In 2020, Undead Labs announced that it was developing State of Decay 3. Aside from its initial trailer, there was radio silence about the game until now.

The June 2024 Xbox Games Showcase also revealed other Xbox first-party games, including Doom: The Dark Ages.

State of Decay 3 doesn’t have a release date yet, but it will launch for PC and Xbox Series X|S. In the meantime, check out the best mods to implement in State of Decay 2.

Undead Labs announced Wednesday that it'll be ending support on 2018's State of Decay 2 later this year to begin preparations for State of Decay 3.

A website post reveals that Update 38 will be the final content update for the zombie survival game. While it doesn't detail too much of what it'll include, the post says the update will fix "longstanding issues" and add more quality-of-life changes. Fans will also gain access to seasonal content, which will be permanently unlocked in the world after the update releases.

Few games have rocked the industry in the way that Baldur's Gate 3 did at launch, and it has been a critical and commercial success on all platforms for which it has been released. Is Baldur's Gate coming to Nintendo Switch?
Baldur's Gate 3 is not available on Nintendo Switch, and there is no indication that Larian Studios has any intentions of bringing it over at this time, if ever. It has already canceled the planned DLC for the game, citing a desire to move on to new projects beyond the Baldur's Gate franchise, likely leaving the series for another developer to pick up down the line.

Speaking to IGN, the game's director, Swen Vincke, said: "We’re going to shift around and we’re going to start doing these other things that we talked about, that we planned on doing before we started on BG3. Those were always the plans for afterward, we have two games that we want to make, and we have lots of concepts. So let’s just have closure on BG3. It’s been great. We’ve done our job. It’s a story with a beginning, a middle, and an end. So let’s pass the torch to another studio to pick up this incredible legacy."

The beta for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 begins tomorrow, and it features eight different modes for players to check out. While I'm guessing most will want to play iconic modes like Team Deathmatch (TDM) or Domination, I recommend you give Kill Order a shot.

Kill Order is a mode new in Black Ops 6 that finds a way to twist the core TDM formula to make it less chaotic. I spoke to developers at Treyarch about its creation and learned that Kill Order works as well as it does because it was built around the aspects of Call of Duty that players like best.
A high-value mode
At its core, Kill Order is TDM with a twist. The basics will be familiar as two teams of six compete to get the most kills, earn points, and win a match. To help focus the action, one player on each team is named the "High Value Target." This "HVT," as the game and developers call it, is powered up with extra armor, directional indicators for other players on the minimap, and the ability to earn more score with each enemy kill. They're not a juggernaut or anything, but in a one-on-one between an HVT and an enemy player, the HVT is more likely to win.
