Everything announced at Summer Game Fest kickoff 2023

The official artwork confirming Summer Game Fest's return on June 8, 2023.

Geoff Keighley returned today with his third Summer Game Fest kickoff showcase. This showcase featured titles big and small from all corners of the video game industry. We got new looks at games like Mortal Kombat 1, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Alan Wake 2, trailers for the new seasons of Fortnite and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and even the announcement of games like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and Sonic Superstars.

Like previous Summer Game Fest kickoff showcases, this live stream was quite dense, with lots of games to keep track of. Don’t worry if you think you missed some featured games, though, as we’ve rounded up every announcement made during the Summer Game Fest kickoff showcase.

Prince of Persia returns with The Lost Crown next January

Prince of Persia The Lost Crown - Reveal Gameplay Trailer

To kick off Summer Game Fest, Ubisoft revealed a brand new Prince of Persia game. Completely separate from The Sands of Time’s remake, this is a 2D action game that looks more similar to the series’ classic titles. That said, it certainly seems to be more action-focused, with the Prince taking on some huge bosses and using a variety of combat abilities in the gameplay-filled announcement trailer. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown will be released on January 18, 2024.

Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay debut impresses

Mortal Kombat 1 Official Gameplay Trailer 2023 4K

After an announcement last month, we finally got a look at the gameplay for Mortal Kombat 1. It still looks like the brutal kind of fighter we’ve come to expect from NetherRealm, and it’s also being realized in very graphically impressive detail. We also got our first look at the game’s Kameo system, which lets players call in additional characters to help during a fight. This trailer, and Geoff’s conversation with Ed Boon afterward, confirm that characters like Baraka, Goro, Stryker, Sonya, and more will be Kameo fighters in the game. Mortal Kombat 1 will be released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S on September 19.

Sonic Superstars is a new cooperative 2D platformer

Sonic Superstars - Announce Trailer

A brand new 2D Sonic game called Sonic Superstars was announced during Summer Game Fest, sporting crisp and colorful visuals, multiple playable characters, and co-op gameplay for up to four players. Sonic also has some new abilities that let him do things like run on walls and up waterfalls. Sonic Superstars will be released for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch this fall.

John Carpenter is working on a horror action game called Toxic Commando

Toxic Commando World Premiere Trailer | Summer Game Fest 2023

John Carpenter, Saber Interactive, and Focus Entertainment revealed John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, a new FPS game where players cooperatively fight hordes of zombies with guns and a wide variety of vehicles, at Summer Game Fest. Considering John Carpenter’s pedigree with horror, this is certainly a game to action-horror fans should keep an eye on. John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando will be released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X in 2024.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 comes out on October 20

Spider-Man 2 Interview with Bryan Intihar | Summer Game Fest 2023

Sony showed up at Summer Game Fest to update us on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The game’s creative director revealed the game’s box art and new artwork featuring Kraven and Venom. During this, he confirmed that Venom will not be Eddie Brock in the game and also confirmed that Queens and Brooklyn are fully explorable. Most importantly, though, a release date was announced. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be released exclusively for PS5 on October 20.

Fortnite Chapter 4 Season Season 3: Wilds adds Optimus Prime

Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 3 WILDS Cinematic Trailer

Epic Games used this Summer Game Fest livestream to debut the trailer that kicks off the next season of Fortnite. Chapter 4 Season 3, also known as Wilds, collapses the center of the map, which is now occupied by jungles, rideable dinosaurs, and abandoned temples. The trailer also confirms that we can expect Optimus Prime and Transformers-themed weapons, which is fitting as Transformers: Rise of the Beats comes out the same day as Chapter 4 Season 3: Wilds, June 9.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth launches in early 2024

FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH – Summer Game Fest 2023 Trailer

To end the show, we got a new trailer for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. We see some of the vast areas that players can explore, rideable Chocobos, new characters, and boss fights. It looks like Yuffie is playable and there will be some more alternate-time narrative plot beats as well. Overall, it looks like an expanded and more vibrant version of Final Fantasy VII Remake. How to revive dead companions in Baldur’s Gate 3
Withers offering services to the player in Baldur's Gate 3.

You're given a good bit of leeway during battles in Baldur's Gate 3 before you or a companion actually bites the dust for good. While in battle, if a teammate does take enough damage to drop, they aren't dead then and there. Instead, they will be downed with a chance to roll every turn to get back up. If they roll successfully three times, the battle ends, or you use another character to pick them up, they're good. If they fail that roll three times, however, they will be completely dead. That can be harsh when you've become attached to certain characters and want to further their stories, so you'll be looking for any way you can to bring them back. Thankfully you do have a few options for reviving companions in Baldur's Gate 3, but just like respeccing, they aren't so obvious.
Pay Withers to bring them back

Withers is a friendly undead you can find in a secret room in the Dank Crypt found inside the Overgrown Ruins. After finding and speaking to him in his sarcophagus, he will offer you various services, one of which is bringing back any dead companions. He won't do this out of the kindness of his heart (probably because it isn't beating) and will charge you a heavy fine of 200 gold to do so. Still, that's a small price to pay to bring back a beloved character. Once paid, that character will appear in your camp where they would normally be, so there's no need to go back to their corpse and find them.

Every video game delay that has happened in 2023 so far
The player skates toward the moon in Skate Story.

Few things feel as inevitable in the video game industry as delays. Ever since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, game delays have only become more and more common as developers find previously set timelines unrealistic and adjust their release plans accordingly. More than halfway through 2023, we've already seen some notable AAA games like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Skull & Bones, and Pragmata delayed pretty heavily. Because video game release date delays are so common, it can be tough to keep track of every game that has had its launch date shifted in some way.
That's why, just as we did in 2021 and 2022, Digital Trends is rounding up every game delay that's announced throughout 2023. Here are the high-profile ones that have happened so far, listed chronologically by their new intended release dates.
The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR (March 16)

As Until Dawn: Rush of Blood is one of the best games for PlayStation VR, The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR, Supermassive Games' PlayStation VR2 successor, is a highly anticipated launch title for the upcoming VR headset. Unfortunately, it will no longer make PlayStation VR2's February 22 launch and will instead be released on March 16. On Twitter, a message from Supermassive Games says this delay will ensure that players "receive the most polished, terrifying experience possible" at release. The game was released on that date to mixed reviews.
Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key (March 24)

Is Remnant 2 cross-platform?
Three characters shoot at a boss in Remnant 2.

Aside from the focus on firearms and integrating some randomly generated environments, the Remnant series sets itself apart from other souls-like games mainly with its focus on co-op. Both titles encourage you to team up with two friends to fight your way through the mutated monsters that await. After so many years of progress in terms of multiplatform games incorporating full cross-platform support, you might assume Remnant 2 will follow suit and let you make a group with anyone regardless of what platform they're on. However, the truth may be a bit more disappointing. Before you make plans with your squad, here's what you need to know about Remnant 2's cross-platform support.
Is Remnant 2 cross-platform?

Unfortunately, Remnant 2 does not have cross-platform play between PS5, Xbox Series X or PC -- and there's no word about it being added in the future.
