Telltale Games trailer tells a tale at The Game Awards: Guardians of the Galaxy series coming

'Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - The Telltale Series' Official Teaser
Among the cavalcade of new trailers at The Game Awards last night came one that provided confirmation of a project that’s been heavily rumored for some time. A short teaser confirmed that Telltale Games is indeed working on a episodic series based on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

Last month, the high-profile voice actors’ strike produced materials that indicated that the studio was working on a game centering on the popular team of intergalactic superheroes. However, last night’s footage did offer up a couple of new pieces of information regarding the project.

For one, the fact that the teaser prominently features a audio cassette mix tape suggests that it will take cues from the recent movie, rather than from the original comic book iteration. While we haven’t seen any character designs just yet, it’s reasonable to believe that they too will take inspiration from the film.

It’s not unexpected to see Telltale gravitate to the movie rather than the comics, since the movie was incredibly successful and built a broad mainstream audience for these characters. However, the studio’s recent Batman series has gone to great lengths to distance itself from the current movie version of the Dark Knight.

The trailer also confirms that the series will consist of five episodes, and is set to arrive on consoles, PC, and mobile devices. No firm release date has been given, but the fact that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits cinemas next year might suggest that episodes will be coming out around the same time.

2017 looks set to be yet another busy year for Telltale. The studio is scheduled to release the first episode of The Walking Dead: A New Frontier later this month, with the remaining four installments hitting next year, while the previously announced second season of Game of Thrones could feasibly follow Guardians of the Galaxy.
