Ubisoft Acquires Hybride

Games creation company Ubisoft has announced that it’s acquired visual effects company Hybride Technologies, the Canadian company that added visual effects to movies like 300, Sin City and the Spy Kids series.

Ubisoft plans to share technology to up the quality of effects for games and, through Hybride, to hopefully brings its intellectual properties to the screen.

Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft’s CEO, said:

“The acquisition of Hybride falls directly into the strategy that has already led us to open in digital creation studio in Montreal and to acquire the Tom Clancy brand for video games and ancillary products. The exception quality of the team at Hybride and the expertise of our Ubisoft teams will allow us to create one of the best 3D animation studios in the animation industry.”

Ubisoft appointed long-time executive Christophe Derennes to replace Yannis Mallat as the head of the company's Montreal studio after allegations of misconduct. Derennes was previously the executive vice president of production at Ubisoft Montreal.

"Derennes has immense expertise in production management in his 25 years with Ubisoft and has been a source of daily support for development teams in the creation of our games and helped make them into the great successes of which we are all proud," Ubisoft said in a statement.

Ubisoft has reportedly canceled an unannounced game even after three years of work on the project, amid what is said to be major changes within the company.

In since-deleted tweets, Ubisoft Montreal graphics programmer Louis de Carufel said that the project that he has been working on for the past three years was shut down. "This is tough news because I've been working with all these people for around 7 years, during which we have shipped both Watch Dogs and Watch Dogs 2."

This week, season pass holders for Tom Clancy's The Divison 2 received access to the second episodic expansion title Pentagon: The Last Castle. The latest DLC introduces a ton of new content to keep the game fresh, including two new main missions: Pentagon and DARPA Research Labs. To celebrate the post-launch milestone, Ubisoft is hosting a free weekend for the game.

So, if you were interested in picking the game up but were unsure if it was worth a buy, now is an excellent time to test it out. Starting on Thursday, October 17, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One users can trot around post-apocalyptic Washington D.C. while shooting down baddies and earning sweet loot. Players can begin to download the game by going to their respective digital stores. PC users can start pre-loading the game by heading to the Epic Games Store or UPlay. The free weekend will conclude on Monday, October 21.
