Ubisoft announces Call of Juarez: The Cartel

A sequel to Ubisoft and developer Techland’s Western-themed first-person shooters is on the way, but the new installment will radically alter the makeup of the Call of Juarez franchise. Where the first two games featured storylines set in the early to mid-1800s, the new title, Call of Juarez: The Cartel, will take place in the modern day setting, and take players from Los Angeles to Juarez, Mexico.

Call of Juarez: The Cartel is an action-packed shooter game with a strong story, interesting characters and a wide variety of gameplay options,” Adam Novickas, director of marketing at Ubisoft, said in the press release. “The game will bring the best elements of the Wild West into modern times with a very gritty and relevant plot.”

The best free FPS games you can play right now
10 essential tips for Arena Mode in Apex Legends

A few years ago, it was hard to find any decent free-to-play games that weren't MMORPGs, and good free first-person shooter (FPS) games were almost non-existent. The few that were around usually came from less-than-reputable sources and usually experienced a host of bugs and connectivity issues.

With battle royale games offering a boon to the free-to-play model, though, AAA studios have started releasing high-quality, free FPS games. Games like Warframe paved the way for Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0.

Warzone 2.0 DMZ Strongholds guide: enemies, loot, and more
A Stronghold in Warzone 2.0.

Warzone was a breakout hit for the Call of Duty franchise. This standalone, free-to-play battle royale game took the popular mode and infused it with the rock-solid gameplay and mechanics people come to the CoD franchise for. After a few years, we finally have our hands on the latest version of this live-service title in Warzone 2.0. This sequel updates the entire game with a new map, guns, mechanics, and battle pass system. However, the developers didn't just stop there.

Just like the original was heavily inspired by other popular games in the battle royale space, Warzone 2.0 is inspired by another unique mode made popular by Escape From Tarkov. This results in a new DMZ mode, but also the inclusion of Strongholds in both the battle royale and DMZ modes. They function differently in each, but play a major role for players drawn to the more high-stakes gameplay found in DMZ. If you're dropping in for the first time, here's everything you need to know about how Strongholds work in DMZ.
