Valve offers new VR beta mode in preparation for Steam Dev Days

valve launches steamvr beta preparation steam dev days

There’s already limited support for virtual reality headsets with certain Steam games, but this week Valve launched the beta for SteamVR, which lets users explore Big Picture Mode from the inside of a VR headset like the Oculus Rift. Setup is simple enough, though let’s take a moment to emphasize the beta-ness of the release. A quick scan through the comments on Valve’s setup page suggests that lots of users are having trouble getting this to work right. The Valve link above contains only partial setup instructions; you can find a more thorough step-by-step at Road To VR (via Joystiq).

It’s probably not a coincidence that the SteamVR beta launched immediately before Steam Dev Days, a Valve developer conference set to happen in Seattle on January 15-16. The Steam gatekeeper is expected to reveal a prototype of its own VR hardware at the event. There are also a number of VR-related talks on the schedule, including one in which Oculus Rift inventor Palmer Luckey will look at the challenges of porting games into virtual reality. We’ll surely have more to share about the perceived future of virtual reality in gaming once Steam Dev Days kicks off tomorrow.

It's not here yet, but the first devices are set to ship in a matter of months. Before they arrive, we rounded up everything you need to know about the Steam Deck, including its release date and price, and what you can expect in terms of performance.

Valve is reviewing every game on Steam for the Steam Deck
Two players using Steam Decks to play Stardew Valley.

To make sure that players aren't disappointed once they finally have their Steam Decks, Valve has said it would test every single game on Steam for the handheld console. The statement comes as part of a larger post regarding the Steam Deck's verification process, which grades games based on their performance on Valve's console.

There are four grades that games can get, ranging from Verified, which means a game can simply be played on a Steam Deck with no issue, to Unsupported. While a large number of games will either be Verified or at least Playable, which means users can play the game after some tooling around with controller configuration, a solid chunk of Steam games will be completely unsupported. Specifically, Steam Deck users won't be able to tape the console to their heads and play VR titles, although that should be a given.

A Nintendo Switch killer may be in the works … or another attempt at one, at least. Ars Technica reports that Valve is working on a portable console code-named SteamPal.

Details on the rumored project are a little hazy. Ars Technica says that multiple sources confirmed that the hardware has quietly been in development for a while now. That report was backed up this week when SteamDB operator Pavel Djundik found references to the device in a Steam update.
