Publisher Ubisoft has pushed back the PC launch of its open-world action game Watch Dogs 2, noting that the game’s developers need extra time to optimize its controls and overall presentation.

Originally set for release alongside PlayStation 4 and Xbox One ports on November 15, the PC version of Watch Dogs 2 is now slated to premiere at the end of November.

“Our team is committed to quality and delivering the best Watch Dogs experience possible,” Ubisoft explained in a recent community blog post. “Therefore, we have made the tough but necessary decision to move the launch date for the PC version of Watch Dogs 2 to November 29. With this extra time, we’ll be able to ensure that Watch Dogs 2 runs smoothly across a broad range of hardware, as well as add that extra polish to those features which matter the most to our community.”

After acknowledging the delay, Ubisoft outlined a number of new features, additions, and tweaks it has in store for the PC version of Watch Dogs 2. By the time it hits Steam and other digital distribution platforms next month, Watch Dogs 2 will boast 4K support courtesy of an optional Ultra Textures pack, which will be available as a free download at launch.

Ubisoft further targets PC performance with the addition of sliders that allow players to control sharpness, pixel density, and field of view. The retail edition of Watch Dogs 2 will have an unlocked frame rate, along with full SLI/Crossfire support.

Other planned additions for the PC version of Watch Dogs 2 include multi-monitor support, expanded windowed mode options, and the introduction of multiple save files, which will track player progress for up to three separate playthroughs.

Ubisoft will also address PC control issues with the addition of “advanced keyboard support” and a “mouse-centric UI,” allowing players to control all interface elements with mouse input. The PC version of Watch Dogs 2 includes a mouse-and-keyboard control setup in addition to support for gamepads, and Ubisoft notes that in-game driving controls have been specifically tuned to accommodate keyboard users.

Watch Dogs 2 hits PC platforms on November 29.

Frostpunk 2 will come to PC Game Pass when it launches this year
A city in Frostpunk 2.

11bit Studios confirmed that Frostpunk 2 will be released on PC sometime during the first half of 2024 and will be on Game Pass from day one alongside the first full gameplay reveal for the highly anticipated survival city-builder.

The new gameplay trailer for Frostpunk 2 is just over two minutes long and gives the public a first look at the game's city-managing mechanics. Frostpunk 2's gameplay significantly departs from its predecessor in some ways, as it's more focused on the macro management of a city that's survived an apocalypse rather than the micromanaging of resources for basic survival. After getting an extended hands-off look at Frostpunk 2 in action last year, I said it "scales its challenges and gameplay systems up while also holding on to the ethical dilemmas and emphasis on consequences that made the original so great (and depressing.)."

Alan Wake 2 is proof that more PC games need a potato mode
Alan Wake 2 running on the Samsung Odyssey OELD G9.

Alan Wake 2 is one of the most beautiful games I've ever played -- and it's the frontrunner for the most demanding PC game you can currently run. For as impressive as the game is, from its path-traced reflections to the extensive use of Nvidia tech, it's so demanding that some otherwise-powerful PCs won't be able to post playable frame rates.

It's clear developer Remedy set out to create a certain atmosphere with Alan Wake 2 that can only be captured with photorealistic visuals. That said, Alan Wake 2 is  proof that more PC games need to adopt a stripped-back graphics setting, even if that means sacrificing a part of what makes the game special.
What in the world is a potato mode?
A potato mode is something so easy to run that you could run it on a potato -- not literally, of course, but that's the sentiment. It's a kill switch graphics option that will only be used by a small fraction of PCs, but it can help the least powerful (and least expensive) rigs at least run an otherwise demanding PC game.
