Despite the high level of excitement and thrills offered by gaming systems, the controllers Microsoft or Sony package with their consoles leave much to be desired. Available in either a stock white or black finish, these traditional controllers are, well, plain. Although companies like Mad Catz offer innovative options for gamers to jazz up their controller game, these offshoots tend to be more of a nuisance than a help — and let’s face it, these are always the controllers Player 2 gets to use.

Well, thanks to some handy work by Instructables user Calkinsd9, some simple soldering work coupled with the installation of a few LED lights is all anyone needs to do to give their Sony-issued DualShock 3 controller a welcome facelift. In a walkthrough published to the popular DIY site, Calkinsd9 came up with the idea for LED lighted joysticks not just to give his controller some added color but to fix some of its sticking buttons and triggers. Though the builder took the opportunity of opening the controller to fix a few things under the hood, an ailing controller is not required to pull off this project.

To help you get a head start on this project, we’ve sifted through the walkthrough to find exactly what’s required for successfully installing the LED lights. Due in part to the fact the project requires the use of a soldering iron, we highly recommend you understand how to use one (or recruit someone who does) before undertaking the build. With that said, here’s everything you’ll need to get started:

Tools:

  • Soldering iron
  • X-Acto knife
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Glue gun

Materials:

  • 30 AWG wire (two different colors)
  • 3mm red LEDs (4)
  • 82-ohm resistors (2)
  • Solder
  • Clear or opaque thumbstick piece (2)
  • PS3 DualShock controller

After assembling the required tools and materials, it’s now time to start on Calkinsd9’s walkthrough. Just follow each of the clearly defined steps and before long, you’ll have your friends green with envy over your new and improved DualShock controller. Happy building!

The entire step-by-step walkthrough for installing LED lights on a DualShock controller can be found here.

Here’s how much PlayStation’s PS1 and PSP games might cost
Nina kicking Kazuya in Tekken 2.

Some of Sony's upcoming PlayStation 1 and PSP titles started appearing on the Asian PlayStation Store. Currently, games like Ape Escape, Mr. Driller, and Tekken 2 are exclusively available on the Hong Kong digital marketplace. While none of these are up for grabs on the Western PlayStation Store, we do have something to go off of on how much they may cost when they do become purchasable.

Of the retro games currently released, the prices run from HK$38 to HK$78. A quick monetary conversion shows that when the titles are brought over to the U.S. PlayStation Store they'll most likely run from $5 to $10. There's currently no indication of what dictates the variation in the cost of each game.

How to watch PlayStation’s March State of Play
Ghostwire Tokyo Tango gameworks E3 2019 Bethesda The Evil Within

Just a month after its last showcase, Sony already has another State of Play on the way. The snappy showcases typically provide looks into what the company has lined up for the next few months, usually including a good number of game announcements or release date reveals.

Based on Sony's description of today's State of Play showcase, we can expect more of the same. Here's how you can watch today's State of Play, when it airs, and what you can expect.
When is the March State of Play?
Sony isn't giving the rumor mill much time to spin with its latest State of Play. The show is set to air today at 2 p.m. PT (5 p.m. ET). While it's later in the day for those on the east coast, this timeslot isn't anything new for Sony's State of Play showcases. Today's State of Play will last a quick 20 minutes.
How can you watch the March State of Play?
Like all other PlayStation State of Play showcases, today's will air on PlayStation's YouTube and Twitch channels at the same time. However, one tends to be ahead of the other, so be sure to check both if you want to see the announcements as fast as possible.
What will be shown at the March State of Play?
Today's State of Play is going to focus on PlayStation's Japanese publishers, meaning we could easily see Capcom's next-gen Resident Evil ports or even some footage of a Resident Evil 4 remake. We'll also get some updates on games from other developers around the world too, so it's extremely likely that Ghostwire: Tokyo will be shown at some point, especially with its release date coming up. As for a non-game announcement, Sony could also use this State of Play to reveal Spartacus, its rumored Game Pass competitor.

What to expect from the PlayStation Showcase?
While an announcement post for the PlayStation Showcase stream lays out (albeit vaguely) what viewers can expect, Sony's recent announcements for PlayStation could give us some specifics. The stream will "include updates from PlayStation Studios and some of the industry's most imaginative developers, for games releasing this holiday and beyond." However, the post explicitly notes that the next-gen iteration of PlayStation VR won't be present at the show.
