Wii Dominates Japanese Market

The Wii machine rolls on in Japan. According to sales figures release by game magazine Enterbrain, some 250,000 Wiis were sold there in August, compared to 80,000 Playstation 3s and a mere 11,000 Xbox 360s.   That simply mirrors the trend in other markets, where the Wii has rolled over the opposition. In the UK it became the fastest-selling console in history, with a million units going off the shelves in 38 weeks.   If you want a comparison, it took the iconic PS2 50 weeks to reach that mark. The Xbox 360 took even longer, 60 weeks.   In Japan the Wii only needed seven months to hit the three million mark. Demand has outstripped supply to the point where it will be a year before there’s no lag.   But it’s not all golden news for Nintendo. Its Japanese lead appears to be slowing. Whereas the Wii was outselling the PS3 by six to one in June, in August that moved to a mere three to one. However, Nintendo can take heart: globally the Wii is poised to overtake sales of the Xbox 360.

Resident Evil 4 demo makes an obscure Wii game a central part of the remake
Leon parries a chainsaw villager in Resident Evil 4.

Resident Evil 4 is a few weeks away, but eager fans can play its opening chapter right now thanks to the newly released Chainsaw Demo. The non-timed demo allows fans to experience the upcoming remake's opening, which sees Leon S. Kennedy fending off a town full of angry villagers. It offers a taste of the full game's reworked combat system, but it also reveals some very significant story changes in the new version.

Like the original Resident Evil 4, the demo opens with a voice-over from Leon recapping previous Resident Evil games. The contents of those two openings are radically different, though.

You need to buy the best Wii U game before the eShop closes down
A Nintendo Wii U gamepad flat on a table.

If you're a Nintendo fan, you should pull out your calendar and put a big red circle around March 27. That's the day that both the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShop will officially shutter their doors. It'll be your last chance to pick up digital copies of all digital games, from Virtual Console classics to first-party exclusives.

There is no shortage of good games worth picking up before that deadline happens, though some of the systems' best titles can be purchased on other platforms. There's one game in particular, though, that finds itself in a precarious position: Affordable Space Adventures. If you even have a passing interest in the Wii U exclusive, you'll have to act fast, because it'll go fully extinct at the end of the month.

Download these rare Wii U games before they disappear

Nintendo's Wii U is notorious for how hard it flopped and for providing the Switch with some of its best ports, but that doesn't mean it didn't have worthwhile games that are still exclusive to it. While many Wii U games have escaped to other platforms and Game Boy Advance games are now coming to Nintendo Switch, some experiences are uniquely suited to the Wii U GamePad or aren't able to make the jump elsewhere due to other outside factors.

As such, when the Wii U and 3DS eShops shut down on March 27, there are some unique Wii U games that will become significantly more expensive and tougher, if not outright impossible, to play. If you're one of the 13.5 million people who actually have a Wii U and are wondering what to pick up before the eShop closes, we recommend these stranded games.
