Control, Doom Eternal, and more coming to Xbox Game Pass in December

Microsoft announced the next batch of games coming to Xbox Game Pass, which includes Control and a PC release for Doom Eternal. Several games will be added to the xCloud streaming service throughout the month.

On December 3, console owners can download and play 2019’s Control through the service. Remedy Entertainment’s third-person shooter will not be available on PC, but Android users can play it via xCloud. A cloud version of the game was recently released for Nintendo Switch.

Outside of Control, Project xCloud gets a fair amount of new games this month. Android owners can play Rage 2, Gang Beasts, Slime Rancher, and more on the service in December.

Doom Eternal, which is currently available to console subscribers, will be available to PC subscribers on December 3. The first-person shooter comes to Game Pass shortly after Microsoft announced that it is acquiring publisher Bethesda and bringing its library to the service.

Notable among the list of new additions is Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition. The complete version of the JRPG hits both consoles and PC on December 4.

Touch controls are coming to a handful of games on Android devices as well. Starting December 3, players can use Android touch controls to play indie titles like Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, Golf With Your Friends, ScourgeBringer, and more.

Several titles will leave the service throughout the month, including Metro: Last Light Redux and indie breakout hit Untitled Goose Game. Players who buy games before they leave the service will save 20% on them.

Your Xbox Live Gold subscription will turn into Xbox Game Pass Core this September

Microsoft finally made the decision to move on from its monthly online-access subscription service Xbox Live Gold. On September 14, Xbox Live Gold will transform into Xbox Game Pass Core, with current Gold subscribers automatically gaining a Game Pass Core subscription.

An Xbox Live subscription tied to online play has existed in some form since Xbox Live launched in 2002, but Xbox Live Gold as we now know it truly came into form in July 2013 when Microsoft started the Games with Gold program that gave subscribers free games each month in addition to that online access. Although Microsoft rolled back some online restrictions in 2021, Games with Gold continues to this day. That will all end when Game Pass Core launches.

Xbox unveils colorful summer collection of headsets, controllers, and more

The Designed for Xbox Summer Collection 2023

Xbox unveiled the second-ever "Designed for Xbox" collection it partnered with accessory manufacturers to make. Called the Designed for Xbox Summer Collection 2023, it's made up of seven Xbox-compatible gaming devices that sport sparkly, sometimes pastel-like designs.
These accessories will all roll out over the course of the summer. That said, some are actually available today. When it comes to controllers, players can pick up the nebula-like purple PowerA Advantage Wired Controller for Xbox Series X/S - Sparkle controller for $38 as well as two Frosted Diamond and Australian Opal PDP Wired Controllers for $40. For those looking to expand their Xbox system's storage, the pastel-colored WD_BLACK D30 Game Drive SSD for Xbox – Limited Edition Summer Collection also launches today for $130.

That's not all, though. Later this month, on July 24, two new Hyperkin Xenon Wired Controllers for Xbox -- which are built like Xbox 360 controllers -- will release. They are sparkly purple Cosmic Night and sparkly black Twilight Galaxy controllers that will each retail for $50.

I’m always excited for those two days every month when Xbox drops a blog post detailing the new additions coming to Game Pass. Even in slow months, there’s usually a hidden gem on there that I’m curious about digging into. Though as curious as I am about checking out what’s new, I often forget to scroll to the bottom and see what’s leaving the service. And just as there are a few standouts added to the service each month, Game Pass also tends to quietly lose just as many with each new batch.

That’s exactly the case this July. While the service gains Grand Theft Auto V and Exoprimal this month, it’s also losing two standout indies: Spelunky 2 and Exo One.
