Yakuza Kiwami coming to Switch after years of developer resistance

The remake of the original 2005 PlayStation 2 game Yakuza is releasing on Switch on October 24 and going back to where the action RPG series began: Kazuma Kiryu getting out of prison after 10 years for a murder he didn’t commit. The game isn’t available for preorder just yet.

Interestingly, developer Ryu Ga Gotoku studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama had previously been skeptical about the series’ prospects for Switch, citing the possibility that the games wouldn’t run well on the platform and that they wouldn’t fit in well with the Switch’s relatively younger audience.

“We still kind of think of ourselves as people of the night world, right? We don’t want to be like walking around the day with everybody else,” Yokoyama said in 2022, although he admitted later in the interview that the Switch’s catalog was changing. “Like for us, it’s kind of showing this kind of underground feeling. I think the underground kind of feeling is what we want to do.”

The Switch release also marks the first time a Yakuza game has released on a Nintendo console since the first two got ported to the Wii U in 2013.

There are a lot of Yakuza/Like a Dragon games, with many spinoffs, as well as mainline titles that follow Kiryu’s story, along with other protagonists like Ichiban Kasuga and Takayuki Yagami. It can be confusing figuring out the best order to play these games, but since Yakuza Kiwami is a remake of the first game, it’s a great place to start for almost any player.

But what’s fun about the Yakuza/Like a Dragon series is that while there is an overarching story and gameplay style, later games go off on their own and experiment with extensive minigames and turn-based RPG combat. Future entries will focus on collecting party members and falling into more turn-based gameplay. I’s another great reason to start with Yakuza Kiwami, so you can see where the series truly began.

After 7 years, the Nintendo Switch finally has an official Joy-Con charging stand
Purple and green Joy-Cons on the black charging stand. There's another charging stand next to it, but it's lying flat on the table with two white Joy-Cons.

You'd think Nintendo would have released a Joy-Con controller charging stand by now, but you'd be wrong. Nintendo is finally releasing one on October 17.

The company announced on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday that it's releasing an official Joy-Con Charging Stand -- more than seven years after the Switch itself debuted. We don't have any other details, nor is it available for preorder, but based on the product images, it seems to support all Joy-Cons -- even the Nintendo Entertainment System Controllers. It also appears to work vertically on a stand and horizontally if you want to lie it flat. As with the Switch itself, it has a USB-C connector on the top.

Nintendo is coming after Switch modders once again
A person plays Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on a Nintendo Switch in handheld mode.

Nintendo is no stranger to lawsuits these days, and it's filed two more, as reported Tuesday. One is against the owner of a company who allegedly sold modded Switches, while the other concerns the moderator of a subreddit where users could learn how to play pirated games.

According to TorrentFreak, which had copies of both complaints filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, Nintendo is suing Modded Hardware and its owner, Ryan "Homebrew Homie" Daly, for selling Mod Chips, modded Switch consoles, and a memory card that lets people play pirated games. Nintendo's lawyer wrote in the suit that this caused "substantial and irreparable" harm to the console giant. It's seeking damages for copyright infringement, along with other charges such as "trafficking in circumvention devices."

The best RPG you’ve never played is coming to Nintendo Switch
The hero of Fantasian runs.

Mistwalker's Apple Arcade exclusive RPG Fantasian is making its way to consoles under the new title Fantasian Neo Dimension. Fantasian was originally released in two parts in 2021, and Fantasian Neo Dimension will contain all the game's content when released on Nintendo Switch for the 2024 holiday season.

During the June 2024 Nintendo Direct, Fantasian Neo Dimension was revealed to be coming to Nintendo Switch in time for the holidays. Fantasian is a turn-based RPG featuring an amnesiac protagonist named Leo who awakens in a dimension known as the Machine Realm. In the Apple version, players would tap on locations to move Leo around the maps and engage in random battles. However, using the Dimengeon system would allow players to disable random battles against foes they already faced and store them in the titular Dimengeon to explore uninterrupted. There is a limit to how many fights can be stored, so players cannot avoid every fight in the game.
