Kinect will be the only way to speak to Cortana on the Xbox One

It sounds very much like you’re going to need a Kinect camera add-on for your Xbox One if you want to talk to the digital assistant on the console. WinBeta spotted a line in some official documentation that seems to clear up any lingering ambiguity over how the feature is going to work once it rolls out.

“The best way to use Cortana on Xbox One is with Kinect,” offered a Microsoft spokesperson when asked if Cortana’s voice control would need Kinect or work through a headset as well. That’s not definitive, but a line from a promotional page adds a bit more clarity: “Kinect required for Cortana speech recognition” it reads.

So if you want to be able to bark commands at Microsoft’s all-knowing app, you’re going to need to invest in a Kinect to go with your console. Microsoft has said that you can access Cortana via text input through your controller, but voice input — the most natural way to get your answers — requires Kinect, not just a microphone.

Cortana is making its way to desktops with the roll-out of Windows 10 as well as iOS and Android smartphones in the near future. Microsoft has obviously decided to take the Google route of getting its apps everywhere even if they’re running on rival platforms, and it’s smart assistant app is going to be far more effective if you can get at it on all your devices.

As for the Windows 10-inspired update for Xbox One, which includes Cortana, we’re expecting it sometime after the desktop OS reaches the masses at the end of July. Eventually you’ll be able to stream Xbox One games to a Windows 10 desktop as the two Microsoft-powered platforms get better acquainted. When the next Xbox One update does appear, it’ll feature a speedy new Dashboard interface, with Cortana playing a major role.

Xbox Game Pass adds one of 2022’s best racing games this month

Microsoft has revealed that games that will be coming to Xbox Game Pass throughout the rest of June and even into early July. While the list lacks any major exclusives or first-party games, a solid racing game from 2022 and some intriguing indies make it an interesting batch. Thankfully, the losses the service will suffer at the end of the month aren't too bad either.
The most notable game to hit Xbox Game Pass Ultimate during the back half of June will be Need for Speed Unbound. Coming to the service via its EA Play connection, this is a solid racing game that I gave a three-and-a-half-star review last year. At the time, I said it was "a surprisingly entertaining racer in a year that hasn’t seen much racing game excitement since Gran Turismo 7." On the indie side of things, The Bookwalker: Thief of Tales will be a day one Xbox Game Pass release on June 22. It's an isometric adventure game where the main gimmick is that players can enter the worlds of books they come across.
Former PlayStation console exclusive F.I.S.T.: Forged in Shadow Torch will also come to Xbox Series X/S via Xbox Game Pass on June 27. This is the full list of titles you can expect to come to the subscription service between today and July 5.

Everything announced at Xbox Games Showcase Extended 2023

Xbox came off one of its best showcases of all time by holding another that got even more detailed about the games that were announced. Xbox Games Showcase Extended 2023 was a slower-paced show that went a lot deeper into some of the games present at the June 11 event. It's featured Xbox Game Showcase titles like Avowed, Microsoft Flight Simulator - Dune Expansion, Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, The Elder Scrolls Online: Necrom, Towerborne, and Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

There were some reveals that were exclusive to this show as well, like DLC for High on Life, an update for Hi-Fi Rush, and some new indie games. It was a surprisingly packed show for being a secondary event. Cross-platform support is becoming more important in the world of video games. Multiplayer hits like Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 and Fortnite have pushed crossplay into the limelight, and now most AAA multiplayer games release with at least partial cross-platform support. Finding every cross-platform game is no easy feat, though, so we did the hard work to bring you a comprehensive list of games that support crossplay.

Unfortunately, there aren't any rules when it comes to crossplay, so each game handles the feature a little differently. To make matters more confusing, certain backward-compatible games on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X still support crossplay on the most recent hardware, even if there isn't an official release for that hardware.
