The Microsoft Band 2 finally supports Cortana on Android

Android users of the Microsoft Band 2 have been missing one important feature — Cortana. That’s despite the fact that Microsoft launched Cortana for Android last year, something many thought would extend to the band.

If you use the Microsoft Band 2 and Android, however, you’ll be happy to hear that the latest update to Microsoft Health finally allows you to access Cortana straight from your wrist. Through Cortana, you’ll be able to get notifications for events, communicate with friends, and so on — all without the need to take your phone out of your pocket.

Cortana isn’t the only addition to the Microsoft Band through the update. With the update, you’ll be able to create challenges for things like steps, runs, bike rides, and so on. You’ll then be able to share the results with Facebook friends who also use the Microsoft Health app.

Microsoft has also taken a page out of Apple’s book for the Band 2 — the device will now remind people to get up and get active if they’ve been sitting down for too long. You can also set timed intervals for these notifications.

Of course, you can opt to use the Android-based Google Now instead of Cortana, which is arguably a better choice for Android users anyway. Still, it’s clear that Microsoft is trying to entice users into its ecosystem beyond simply using its fitness tracker. This could be very appealing to Windows users, who would be able to use a single assistant over multiple operating systems. Adding Cortana to the mix could also help Microsoft make some headway into search — Cortana uses Microsoft’s Bing search engine to search the web.

The Microsoft Band is a great device, but it certainly has its issues. Sure, there are plenty of sensors and a decent interface, however, the device easily scratches and the design isn’t that great. Perhaps the addition of Cortana will help entice more Android users to take the plunge and buy the Band 2.

SMS 2FA is insecure and bad — use these 5 great authenticator apps instead
Twilio Authy 2FA app running on an iPhone.

You probably have what seems like a million accounts across the internet these days, right? At least, that’s what it feels like for me — with all these social media, email, and banking accounts, plus digital storefronts, and more. Regardless of where I access these from, whether it’s my iPhone 14 Pro or my Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus, or even my Mac, the first step is to make sure that I have a strong and secure (preferably randomly generated) password. But for extra peace of mind, everyone needs to look into two-factor authentication (2FA) to really keep people out.

Recently, Twitter has made the news yet again because it’s forcing everyone who uses SMS 2FA to either remove it from their account or subscribe to Twitter Blue to keep it. SMS 2FA is when you get a code sent as an SMS to your phone, and while it's convenient, this is the least secure 2FA method available. SMS 2FA is susceptible to numerous vulnerabilities, including SIM swapping (where someone takes over a mobile phone number by convincing a carrier to link that number with the SIM card), SIM duplication attacks, and more.

Forget the Steam Deck — this modded Android phone is a gamer’s dream
Modified Surface Duo 2 gaming rig

Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2 is one of the most divisive devices out there. On one hand, its dual-screen design has won laurels, and there’s a very small bunch of loyal enthusiasts that swear by its productivity tricks. But there are a whole bunch of practical flaws with the camera, battery life, and UI departments that kept this phone-tablet hybrid from realizing its true potential.

Of course, a sky-high asking price didn’t do it any favors. However, one enthusiast has turned it into a handheld gaming machine with a few cool add-ons — and it honestly looks pretty incredible. On Reddit, one Surface Duo 2 owner (going by the username u/Sarspazzard) showcased their Frankenstein version of Microsoft’s doomed phone after giving it a glorious handheld gaming makeover.

It’s almost February, which, for most people, means pink and red hearts for Valentine’s Day. But there’s more to February than that — February is Black History Month. To commemorate the occasion, Apple released a brand new Black Unity band for the Apple Watch. In 2021, the Black Unity band was in the Sport Band style, while 2022’s version was the Braided Solo Loop. For 2023, Apple went with the Sport Loop style.
