Amazon’s new Fire TV user interface looks pretty different, and pretty great

Not that you necessarily needed an excuse to spend more time binge watching your favorite television shows on Amazon, but if you were in search of just one more reason to spend your weekend glued to your computer or television screen, here it is — Amazon has just unveiled its new Fire TV user interface, and it’ll make your viewing experience all the better (if that were even possible).

In the most significant change to the UI since Fire TV’s initial debut in April of 2014, the new user experience no longer features different categories in side-scrolling carousels in the primary navigation located on left side of your interface. Rather, you’ll now see everything at the very top of your screen, and you won’t have to choose from so many categories, either. Paradox of choice, you see.

Rather, Amazon told Slashgear, the new larger space allows users to “preview new TV shows like Amazon’s Originals, movies, apps, and games,” and can also be “scrolled from side to side to see other headline titles.”

Moreover, Amazon has learned from its users preferences, and discovered that Fire TV subscribers were much more inclined to watch a show if they could sample it first — not just look at a still image from the series. That means that the hero image of a show is actually a moving image — like a trailer. Ultimately, Amazon says, “hero contents will be shaped by what individual users have been watching.”

Amazon has also made it easier to determine which content is free to watch, and which you’ll have to pay for, by including a “Prime Video” flag for its own shows and movies that are included with your subscription. And if you navigate over to the “Your Movies” tab, you’ll find everything to which you have a subscription. That means all your Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon titles will be in one place, and Fire TV will always play the version that is free for you to view.

So go ahead, friends — figure out your queue for the holiday season. It’s fast approaching.

Amazon’s God of War show is going back to the drawing board
Kratos yells in God of War Ragnarök.

Of all of the many video game adaptations that are in the works right now in Hollywood, few carry quite as much promise as Amazon's God of War TV series. The original God of War games — particularly the franchise's 2018 and 2022 installments — already boast a cinematic quality that should make them easier to adapt for the big or small screen than most video games. Despite that fact, Amazon has made little progress on its God of War adaptation in the two years since it greenlit it with a series order.

As a matter of fact, the project has just taken a major step backward. Deadline reports that original God of War showrunner Rafe Judkins, as well as fellow executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, have all parted ways with the project. This development comes even after the trio completed multiple scripts for the show's intended first season and after Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios' shared a desire to take the series in a new creative direction.

Amazon simplifies its lineup with the new Fire TV Stick HD
A promo image of the Amazon Fire TV Stick HD.

It's a little hard to believe we've gone through most of 2024 without a new Amazon Fire TV Stick. That is, until now. The Fire TV Stick HD has been announced, with the $35 device reducing the Fire TV Stick lineup from four to three and in the process replacing the two oldest sticks in the family. The $40 Fire TV Stick and the $30 Fire TV Stick Lite will still be around while they're in stock. But after that, they're gone.

The other two current devices remain the second-generation Fire TV Stick 4K, and the second-gen Fire TV Stick 4K Max, which we still consider to be the best Fire TV Stick to get.

A Thousand Blows teaser reveals first look at new series from Peaky Blinders creator
Stephen Graham walks shirtless in A Thousand Blows.

"No one gets to take from me and live. No one," vows Sugar Goodson (Stephen Graham), a dangerous criminal kingpin, in the first teaser trailer for A Thousand Blows. The forthcoming drama is the latest TV offering from Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. Like his most successful and beloved TV effort, too, A Thousand Blows will both explore England's history and immerse viewers in a criminal underworld full of tension, deceit, and violence.

Inspired by numerous real-life stories, the series is set in the East End of London in the 1880s. It follows two friends from Jamaica, Hezekiah (Malachi Kirby) and Alec (Francis Lovehall), as they find themselves fighting for their lives in East London's criminal underground. Once there, Hezekiah and Alec not only cross paths with Mary Carr (Erin Doherty), the leader of an all-female gang, but also make an unfortunate enemy of Graham's Sugar, whose criminal viciousness is reflected in his skill as an illegal boxer.
