Amazon launches 14 pilots to gauge interest in series development

amazon_studios

Available on Amazon currently, the retail giant is attempting to crowdsource user feedback in order to determine which original pilots will be turned into a series for Amazon Instant Video. Previously announced last year, there are six children’s shows and eight adult comedy shows available to watch for free on Amazon assuming you live in the United States, United Kingdom, or Germany. Once a viewer has completed watching an entire pilot, they will be asked to provide feedback. This information will be collected and used to determine which shows will continue on to full series development.

alpha-houseIn order to watch any of the series that get developed, you will need an $79-per-year Amazon Prime subscription to get access to the show at no additional cost. It’s also possible that Amazon could charge users on a per-episode basis, assuming the Amazon user doesn’t have a Prime subscription.

The overall cost of Amazon Prime is actually cheaper than Netflix by about 15 percent when adding up an entire year of service and comes with other benefits such as free two-day shipping and a free book rental per month from the Amazon Kindle lending library.

Shows included within the comedy pilots include a continuation of the Zombieland movie using different actors, a clay-mation pilot called Dark Minions, a pilot about developing applications in Silicon Valley called Betas, a high school pilot about disgruntled teachers called Those Who Can’t, a musical comedy about an online startup called Browsers!, an animated horror/fantasy show called Supanatural, a spoof on a ridiculous news network called Onion News Empire and a pilot about four U.S. senators living under the same roof in Washington D.C. called Alpha House.

Amazon moved to start building original content last year in order to compete more effectively with Netflix and Hulu Plus. Just yesterday, Netflix made all thirteen episodes of Eli Roth’s Hemlock Grove available to watch to Netflix Instant subscribers. In addition, the fourth season of Arrested Development will launch on Memorial Day weekend next month.

The Nvida Shield TV with its remote, on a white background.

If you're thinking about buying a streaming media player for your 4K TV, you should check out Amazon's Prime Day deals for options like the Nvidia Shield. From its original price of $200, a $30 discount knocks it down to $170, but if you want to take advantage of this bargain, it's highly recommended that you buy the device right now. That's because stocks may not last until the end of the shopping event on July 12. Don't delay your purchase until the last minute, or else you might miss out.

Why you should buy the Nvidia Shield
The Nvidia Shield is in our roundup of the best streaming devices as the next-best streaming device after the Apple TV 4K. It supports both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos for a complete cinematic experience while you're watching your favorite streaming shows and movies, which you can get in 4K Ultra HD resolution if your TV supports it. The Nvidia Shield is powered by the brand's Tegra X1+ processor, and as an Android-based device, it comes with built-in Google Assistant so that you can use voice commands for a variety of functions such as searching for content, controlling playback, and accessing your other smart home devices.

Amazon’s best Fire TV Stick is 55% off in its 4th of July sale
Two Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max sticks in hand.

While most modern TVs tend to have some form of smart TV platform, that doesn't mean it will be any good or work with your ecosystem. That's why streaming sticks like the Fire TV are great; it works for TVs without a smart TV platform and allows you to be part of an ecosystem you're familiar with. There's even a great 4th of July sale going on right now on the Fire TV Stick 4K Max from Amazon, bringing it down to $25 rather than $55.

Why you should buy the Fire TV Stick 4K Max
With so many options for Fire Sticks, it can be hard to pick between the Fire TV Stick vs. Fire TV Stick 4K Max vs. Fire TV Cube, especially if you've just started taking a look at Fire TV sticks. Well, the long and short of it is that the Fire TV Stick 4k Max is likely what you want to aim for since the Cube has a ton of more complex features and has an associated higher cost, while the Fire TV Stick 4k is an older version of the Max that's 60% less powerful. One of the most significant upgrades over the previous version is the inclusion of Wi-Fi 6, which gives you a more stable and faster connection overall when working with Wi-Fi 6 routers. It also means you don't have to spring for Amazon's ethernet adaptor, which is overpriced and clunky; at that point, you might as well go for the Cube.
