Apple TV 3.0: Out and Updated

apple-tv

Apple announced today it has updated the software for its Apple TV set-top box to version 3.0.   Apple TV’s update to 3.0 does provide a new interface and home screen with quick access to favorite content, streaming capabilities for Internet radio stations, and also support for iTunes LPs and iTunes Extras. The new terms and conditons for iTunes store reads, “iTunes LP and iTunes Extras Products are usable only on computers with iTunes 9 or higher and Apple TV with software version 3.0 or higher.” In true Apple fashion, the update does not include any outside content, such as streaming from Netflix, Hulu, or any TV networks.

Apple TV hasn’t been the biggest hit with consumers, ranking a low 297 on Amazon’s best-selling tech list—in fact—many consumers may not even know it exists. Even after a $100 price cut last month, and pulling the plug on its smaller version, Apple TV has not seen much action in its brief existence.  Many industry insiders blame Steve Jobs dislike of anything live

Apple TV’s multiview feature is now live in beta
Apple TV's multiview feature as seen with Friday Night Baseball.

A new multiview feature — by which you can watch multiple games at one time — has hit the beta track o thef Apple TV operating system. It previously was hinted at in code, and it's now available for actual use.

Again, you'll have to be on the beta track of the Apple TV operating system for this to work at all, and as of right now, that's tvOS 16.5. But once it's enabled, it's a pretty simple process to add additional games, and flip between any of them using the Siri Remote. It wasn't immediately clear if Apple's implementation would be available to other applications, or if it would be kept just within the Apple TV app for now.

An Apple TV 4K set-top box and remote control sit on a media stand.

Apple TV has been one of the best streaming devices on the market since it launched in 2006. Not only is it an access point for all of the streaming services users know and want, Apple's seamless and user-friendly interface, powerful network performance, and integration with smart home products and other devices in the Apple ecosystem (such as the new and improved Apple HomePod), is second to none. And with the introduction of the Apple TV 4K in 2017, Apple added 4K resolution to the peripheral's list of accolades.

Fast-forward four years to the release of the 2021 version of the Apple TV 4K, and we got faster frame rate performance for 4K content (60 fps), an amped-up A12 Bionic chip, along with an improved Siri remote. How could life get any better for Apple's calling card streaming device? Well friends, true champions never rest.

Apple TV: price, hardware, software, and more
Apple TV 4K hardware with remote and retail box.

Apple TV is the umbrella term for Apple's living room strategy. It encompasses hardware, software, and a streaming service, all of which share the "Apple TV" name. Or maybe you're talking about the Apple TV app, which is available most just on Apple TV, but also on other Apple products.

It gets a little confusing, perhaps. But that's where we come in.
