The best noise cancellers in the biz get better with Bose’s new QC25

Bose’s noise canceling headphones are the number one choice among frequent travelers — just take a look around the next time you’re on a plane. But headphone enthusiasts (including ourselves) will be quick to tell you that the ubiquitous Quiet Comfort 15 model, while excellent at canceling noise, left something to be desired in the sound quality department. With the new QC25, Bose aimed to remedy that issue — and it was successful.

The QC25 don’t cram in a glut of features like their competition. You don’t get Bluetooth for wireless listening, and there’s no built-in rechargeable battery (keep a spare AAA around at all times). What they do offer, however, is excellent comfort, best-in-class noise canceling, and sound quality that rivals some of the best noise-canceling headphones on the market.

Over the years, we’ve tested noise cancelers from the likes of Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, PSB, Phiaton, Beats, Logitech, Polk and others, and while some of them have a leg up on the QC25 in terms of sound quality (not by much, now) none of them can beat Bose at its own game when it comes to noise canceling. Simply said: You won’t find a more effective pair of full-size active noise-canceling headphones out there.

Marshall updates its noise-canceling earbuds with better battery life

Marshall's second-gen Motif ANC wireless earbuds -- appropriately called the Marshall Motif II ANC -- look exactly like the first-gen Motif, but under the hood are some welcome enhancements like better battery life, better active noise cancellation (ANC) performance, and support for Bluetooth LE Audio. The price, on the other hand, remains the same: you can buy them staring August 29 for $199 on Marshall's website. The company expects them to ship on September 12.

Marshall has a talent for understatement. Its press release for the Marshall Motif II ANC talks about the improved battery life twice -- the new earbuds now get six hours of ANC playtime on a charge and a total of 30 hours with the case (versus 4.5 and 20 on the first-gen) -- but never mentions that the new Motif now have Bluetooth Multipoint for connecting two devices simultaneously.

Beyerdynamic adds noise canceling to its Blue Byrd neckband earbuds

While most of the attention these days is on true wireless earbuds, it's easy to forget that some folks much prefer the older neckband style for its simple convenience and longer battery life. Beyerdynamic clearly hasn't forgotten. Despite launching its first true wireless earbuds in 2022 -- the Free Byrd -- the company is continuing to develop its original Blue Byrd neckband-style buds with the introduction of the second-gen Blue Byrd ANC ($149).

As the name suggests, the new earbuds have active noise cancellation (ANC), a feature that remains fairly rare in the neckband earbuds category. You can buy them now from Beyerdynamic or Amazon.

Bose shrinks the size and ups the performance of its noise-canceling earbuds

Bose has revealed the newest version of its flagship noise-canceling wireless earbuds, the QuietComfort Earbuds II. They're significantly smaller than their predecessors and feature a new algorithm that constantly adjusts to your individual hearing profile, as well as your surroundings. Bose says they provide the best ANC performance of any headphone, whether in earbud or headset formats.

The QuietComfort Earbuds II are a bit more expensive than the first version -- $299 versus $279 -- and almost $50 more than Apple's second-gen AirPods Pro wireless earbuds, which were announced on the same day and offer very similar features. You can pre-order the QuietComfort Earbuds II starting September 7 on Bose.com in Triple Black. They will begin shipping on September 15 and a Soapstone color is expected to be available later in 2022.
