Bose soundbars can now send surround sound to your earbuds

Bose has rebranded its midrange Smart Soundbar 600 as simply the “Bose Smart Soundbar.” The size, the sound, and even price ($499) remain the same, but the new model offers an improved AI-powered dialogue mode, plus a wild new option for those who own the company’s Bose Open Ultra Earbuds: surround sound without surround speakers. It’s available starting September 18 from bose.com.

Bose’s AI Dialogue Mode debuted on the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar, and its machine learning-based algorithm lets the soundbar automatically adjust tonal balance in real time when it detects speech in an audio stream for clarity. This creates more separation between voices and background sound effects.

But from an innovation point of view, Bose Personal Surround Sound is the most interesting aspect of the new Bose Smart Soundbar. That’s the name Bose has given to the ability to pair a set of Bose Open Ultra Earbuds to the soundbar, which lets the earbuds receive the same left/right surround channels that would otherwise be processed by the bar itself, or sent wirelessly to a set of Bose Surround Speakers.

Because the Open Ultra Earbuds use an open-ear design, the wearer can hear both the soundbar and the earbuds at the same time. Bose Personal Surround Sound will eventually be offered as an update to the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar. Digital Trends asked a Bose spokesperson if the company planned to enable Personal Surround Sound on the existing Smart Soundbar 600. “We’re always looking at ways we can expand product functionality for our existing customers,” we were told via email, but Bose didn’t have any specific info to share regarding the 600.

While it might not make sense to buy the $299 Open Ultra Earbuds just for this purpose, if you already own them — or have been considering them — you may be able to save yourself $100 (the Bose Surround Speakers cost $399).

The rebranding continues Bose’s move away from number-oriented model names. The company has already discontinued its smallest smart soundbar — the Smart Soundbar 300 — and rebranded the Smart Soundbar 900 as the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar, leaving just two Wi-Fi connected soundbars in the company’s home theater portfolio. The Bose TV Speaker is the company’s non-Wi-Fi option.

The Bose Smart Soundbar maintains Dolby Atmos compatibility, helped by its built-in up-firing drivers, and it enjoys excellent wireless streaming support thanks to AirPlay 2, Google Cast (formerly Chromecast built-in), Alexa Cast, and Bluetooth. You can use it as an Amazon Alexa smart speaker, and it’s compatible with Google Assistant.

You can now buy TCL’s 7.1.4-channel, 860-watt soundbar for $600
TCL 2024 Q Class Q85H soundbar.

In May, TCL formally announced its new soundbar lineup for 2024. At the very top sat the TCL Q85H, a 7.1.4-channel, 860-watt Dolby Atmos- and DTS:X-capable beast with a surprisingly reasonable price: $1,000. Today, you can buy the Q85H for the first time, and both Amazon and BestBuy have set their prices even lower at just $600.

Considering the Q85H's specs, that's a stunningly small amount to pay. In case you missed the original launch, let's quickly recap.

Nakamichi’s insane Dragon soundbar reborn with quad 750-watt subwoofers
Nakamichi

When it comes to Nakamichi's Dragon Dolby Atmos soundbar, hyperbole just comes with the territory. After all, massive performance is what you should expect from a $3,900, 3,000-watt, 11.4.6-channel monster of a sound system. But apparently, we ain't seen (or heard) nothing yet: the company has just announced a new 12-inch, 750-watt subwoofer for the Dragon, which can be added as an upgrade to existing systems for $1,500, or you can order the Dragon with up to four of these massive cubes for a grand total of $8,500. That gets you 5,000 total system watts, by the way.

Nakamichi says it developed the new 12-inch sub as a direct response to customer feedback. Its survey of owners and "fans" revealed that 41% of the respondents want three or more subs, and that 67% of them think those subs should have a 12-inch or bigger driver.

1More says its $90 SonoFlow Pro HQ51 headphones are better than Bose and Sony
1More SonoFlow Pro HQ51.

1More has released two new upgraded products in its wireless headphones and open-ear earbuds lineup with the SonoFlow Pro HQ51 ($90) and Open Ear S70 ($120). Both will be available mid-to-late August, with $20 discounts for those who order during the promotional launch window.

The SonoFlow Pro HQ51 picks up where the original SonoFlow leaves off -- the two models have a nearly identical shape and design. Comfort may be slightly enhanced -- the new cans now use leather ear cushions. 1More has given battery life (which was already outstanding at 50 hours with ANC) a bump to 65 hours, a number that jumps to 100 when you turn ANC off.
