Bose Tweaks SoundDock with Series II

Bose Tweaks SoundDock with Series II

Bose may already have one of the priciest stationary iPod docks out there with its $229 SoundDock digital music system, but the next iteration will set the bar even higher – and add a few features in the process. The SoundDock Series II, announced Thursday, will refine the original’s styling and add more player compatibility.

While the original SoundDock and its successor, the SoundDock Portable, appeared almost like twins to the untrained eye, the SoundDock Series II will favor more the approach of the portable version by using cleaner lines. It does, however, maintain a footprint almost exactly the same size as the original: roughly a foot wide, six inches tall and six inches deep.

In addition to being compatible with almost all iPods, the Series II will also support iPhones, and is one of the few docks that allows them to be used without going into “airplane mode,” meaning the speakers and wiring have been shielded from cell interference. Bose has also added an auxiliary jack for playing music from non-Apple sources.

The SoundDock Series II will debut in September for $70 more than its successor – $299.

Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II will get lossless, Snapdragon Sound in 2023
Close-up of Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II.

Bose showed up at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Summit being held in Hawaii to make a surprise announcement: The company will be adding Qualcomm's Snapdragon Sound certification to the QuietComfort Earbuds II (QCE II) in spring 2023, bringing 24-bit and lossless audio to Bose's flagship earbuds.

When Bose launched the QCE II earlier in 2022, the wireless earbuds only supported SBC and AAC codecs, making them something of an outlier in terms of flagship wireless earbuds. Many of Bose's competitors (with the notable exception of Apple's AirPods Pro) support some flavor of 24-bit capable codec. At the time, we asked company spokespeople if there were any plans to add high-res capabilities, but all we got were some careful acknowledgments that it wasn't out of the question.

How to watch the World Series in 4K
World Series on the Fox Sports app on an iPhone.

The Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies are set to go clash in the 2022 World Series. It's baseball, so there's drama. (And we're not just talking about the argument for lifetime bans of Astros folk.) The Phillies are in their first postseason since 2011, never mind making it all the way to the final series.

So, yeah. This is gonna be good. And it's exactly the sort of thing you'll want to watch in the best resolution possible.
