Charlie’s Angels: the First Blu-ray Disc?

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on Friday said that authoring had been completed on the first Blu-ray Disc to contain a full length, high definition feature film. And the winner for this coveted place in consumer technology history as the first prototype is? Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.

SPHE said the movie was compressed and authored in MPEG 2 full high-definition (1920 x 1080) by Sony Pictures’ Digital Authoring Center and now being player tested. The Blu-ray Disc, said Sony, “features dynamic menus with full resolution graphics and animation, superior audio and unparalleled picture quality.”

“We are extremely proud to deliver on the promise of Blu-ray,” said Don Eklund, Senior Vice President, Advanced Technologies, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. “This is an important step for our industry in order to begin mass production of high-definition movies in the Blu-ray format in the near future.”

The first Roku-made televisions are now available at Best Buy
Roku Select Series television.

Roku today announced that its first slate of Roku Select and Roku Plus Series televisions — the first sets to actually be made by Roku — are now available exclusively at Best Buy. The first 11 models are meant to be affordable options not unlike the Roku TVs made by the company's manufacturing partners. (Those partners, so far as we know, will still make their own Roku TVs.)

The Plus Series is the more advanced of the two options, with QLED screens at 55, 65, and 75 inches. Those prices hit $649, $749, and $1,199, respectively.

Spotify gets first major redesign in 10 years with TikTok-like scroll

Spotify held its second annual Stream On event for creators today, and while the streamer didn't announce the coming of its hi-res music tier, it took the opportunity to lift the veil off its biggest redesign in a decade. The revamp not only brings a new scrolling, image-heavy, interactive visual look reminiscent of TikTok and Instagram to the mobile app's Home page, but there are several new discovery-based features for music, podcasts, and audiobooks.

While the Stream On event had a major focus on new tools and resources for music artists, podcasters, and audiobook creators, the beginning of the presentation was big on the new look and features for users -- some that will be available to everyone and some to subscribers only. The biggest change comes to the Home screen, which takes the old layout of album artwork and static images and brings it to life with video clips, audio previews of songs, playlists, albums, podcast episodes, and more.
