Big news for Chromecast users came out of today’s Nexus event. In addition to showing off two new Chromecast devices, Google announced that a handful of popular services are adding Cast support. Showtime and Spotify support landed on the device starting today, while support for Sling TV, the NBA, and NHL apps are on the way.

While the promise of new app support for the NBA and NHL mobile apps is exciting, Sling TV is possibly the biggest app coming to Chromecast in the near future. The service allows subscribers to watch over 20 channels of live TV for $20 per month, and while it’s had its issues when it comes to handling the inherent volatility of live TV delivered online, adding Chromecast support makes Sling TV more accessible than ever.

Sling TV also shared news about the new partnership on its company blog, revealing that Chromecast will be added as one of the Internet TV service’s supported devices in “the coming weeks.” According to Sling TV CEO Roger Lynch, “Chromecast has been one of [the company’s] most requested devices.” Users are getting their way, with Sling TV on Chromecast set to work with Android smartphones and tablets, iPhones, and iPads. Compatibility for Windows and Macs is in the works.

Although DirecTV’s NFL Sunday Ticket is already supported, the app is getting new features on Chromecast. Through an update, users will be able to stream games on their TV and simultaneously use their phones to check up on scores and stats on the mobile app. As any fantasy football fan knows, that’s huge.

Those who want to try out the latest apps to add Chromecast support may also want to consider stepping up to the second-generation Chromecast. According to Google, the new devices will provide higher video quality and users won’t have to put up with as much buffering because the device is designed to work better with your wireless router.

In addition, search functionality has been improved to make it easier to find TV series or movies you’re interested in, whether you’re browsing or looking for something specific. And while it’s highly likely that the new Chromecast still lags behind there in comparison to the new Amazon Fire TVs, and the new Apple TV, its $35 price point makes it the most accessible streaming device on the block.

Chromecast with Google TV users can add the Apple TV app to their devices from the Google Play Store starting today. This gives Apple yet another device that can run its curated entertainment experience, as well as its subscription streaming service, Apple TV+. The Apple TV app is already available on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, and several smart TV platforms from brands like LG and Samsung.

What's unusual about the Chromecast with Google TV announcement is that it appears to create a Russian Matryoshka doll effect in terms of the user experience. Both Google TV and the Apple TV app are designed to be holistic streaming experiences that can bring all of your content into one place, with suggestions curated by an algorithm. By adding the Apple TV app to Google TV, users will effectively be putting a curated experience inside a curated experience.

If you were hoping to cut the cord by signing up with Sling TV, we've got some bad news: The live TV streaming service has just announced a price increase that bumps its Sling Orange and Sling Blue packages to $35 per month -- $5  more than their previous $30 per month level. The combo Sling Orange + Blue package is also going up by $5 to $50 per month. The increase only affects new subscriptions for now, as the company's one-year price guarantee means existing customers can hold onto the lower prices until the end of  July 2021, as long as their subscription remains active.

"Unfortunately, we are forced to raise prices because the television networks keep charging us more," said Michael Schwimmer, Sling TV's group president. But Schwimmer insists that despite the increase, Sling TV is "still the best deal in the market," with prices that are much lower than cable and other live streaming services.

Google's new Chromecast with Google TV is a $50 streaming media player that combines the convenience of a Chromecast device with the full feature set you'd expect from a set-top box like a Roku or a Fire TV.

But one area where it differentiates itself from the other $50 streamers made by Roku, Amazon, and TiVo is its tight integration with Google's own YouTube TV live TV streaming service. By flipping to the Live tab inside the Google TV interface, you can quickly and seamlessly access all of YouTube TV's content including the on-screen guide and all of the shows in your DVR.
